Formulas: algebra, grade 8

The linear function

  • A linear function – m\displaystyle m the slope; the line crosses the y\displaystyle y-axis at (0,b)\displaystyle (0,b)
    y=mx+b\displaystyle y=mx+b
  • The slope of the line through (x1,y1)\displaystyle (x_1,y_1) and (x2,y2)\displaystyle (x_2,y_2)
    m=y2−y1x2−x1\displaystyle m=\frac{y_2-y_1}{x_2-x_1}
  • Parallel lines have the same slope
    m1=m2\displaystyle m_1=m_2
  • A line through the origin – b=0\displaystyle {b}={0}
    y=mx\displaystyle y=mx
  • A horizontal line – the slope is 0
    y=b\displaystyle y=b

Word problems

  • p\displaystyle p percent of x\displaystyle x
    p100⋅x\displaystyle \frac{p}{100}\cdot x
  • s\displaystyle s the distance, v\displaystyle v the speed, t\displaystyle t the time
    s\displaystyle s =\displaystyle = v⋅t\displaystyle v\cdot t

Inequalities

  • Adding or subtracting the same number on both sides – the sign stays
    a+c<b+c\displaystyle a+c<b+ca<b\displaystyle a<b
  • Multiplying or dividing by a positive number – the sign stays
    a⋅c<b⋅c\displaystyle a\cdot c<b\cdot ca<b, c>0\displaystyle a<b,\ c>0
  • Multiplying or dividing by a negative number – the sign turns round
    a⋅c>b⋅c\displaystyle a\cdot c>b\cdot ca<b, c<0\displaystyle a<b,\ c<0
