Formulas: percent, ratio and scale, grade 6

A percent is a hundredth

  • a\displaystyle a percent are a\displaystyle a hundredths
    a%\displaystyle a\% =\displaystyle = a100\displaystyle \frac{a}{100}
  • The whole
    100%\displaystyle 100\% =\displaystyle = 1\displaystyle 1
  • A half
    50%\displaystyle 50\% =\displaystyle = 12\displaystyle \frac{1}{2}
  • A quarter
    25%\displaystyle 25\% =\displaystyle = 14\displaystyle \frac{1}{4}
  • Three quarters
    75%\displaystyle 75\% =\displaystyle = 34\displaystyle \frac{3}{4}
  • A tenth
    10%\displaystyle 10\% =\displaystyle = 110\displaystyle \frac{1}{10}
  • A fifth
    20%\displaystyle 20\% =\displaystyle = 15\displaystyle \frac{1}{5}
  • An eighth
    1212%\displaystyle 12\frac{1}{2}\% =\displaystyle = 18\displaystyle \frac{1}{8}

The value of a percent

  • a%\displaystyle a\% of the whole quantity b\displaystyle b
    a%×b\displaystyle a\%\times b =\displaystyle = a100×b\displaystyle \frac{a}{100}\times b
  • The percent and the quantity can change places: 18% of 50 is 50% of 18
    a%×b\displaystyle a\%\times b =\displaystyle = b%×a\displaystyle b\%\times a

Finding the percent

  • What percent a\displaystyle a is of b\displaystyle b – reduce or expand to the denominator 100; the numerator p\displaystyle p is the number of percent
    ab=p100=p%\displaystyle \frac{a}{b}=\frac{p}{100}=p\%

Ratio

  • A ratio is a quotient – it can be written as a fraction
    a:b\displaystyle a:b =\displaystyle = ab\displaystyle \frac{a}{b}
  • Equal ratios – both numbers multiplied or divided by the same number k\displaystyle k
    a:b\displaystyle a:b =\displaystyle = (a×k):(b×k)\displaystyle (a\times k):(b\times k)k≠0\displaystyle k\neq0
  • A quantity c\displaystyle c shared in the ratio a:b\displaystyle a:b – the first share (a\displaystyle a parts out of a+b\displaystyle a+b)
    ca+b×a\displaystyle \frac{c}{a+b}\times a
  • A quantity c\displaystyle c shared in the ratio a:b\displaystyle a:b – the second share (b\displaystyle b parts out of a+b\displaystyle a+b)
    ca+b×b\displaystyle \frac{c}{a+b}\times b

Scale

  • At the scale 1:n\displaystyle 1:n – a\displaystyle a the length in the drawing, b\displaystyle b the real length, in the same unit
    b\displaystyle b =\displaystyle = a×n\displaystyle a\times n
