Formulas: probability, grade 11 (5 units)
The rules of probability
- Equally likely outcomes – the outcomes in the event , the outcomes in the sample space
- Every event; , and for the sample space
- An event contained in another event
- The complement – does not happen
- The union – or (or both); – the intersection, both and
- Disjoint events – no two of them have an outcome in common
Conditional probability and independence
- The probability of given
- A path in a tree – the product of the probabilities on its branches
- Independent events
- Independent events – knowing that happened does not change the probability of
- The law of total probability – the paths that end in , added up
Counting and Bernoulli's formula
- factorial;
- Ordered selections – different objects out of , one after another
- The binomial coefficient – the ways to choose objects out of , order not counted
- Bernoulli’s formula – the probability of successes in independent trials, with the probability of success in each
- At least one success in trials – by the complement
