Formulas: ratio, proportion and percent, grade 8

Ratio and proportion

  • A ratio is also a fraction
    a:b\displaystyle a:b =\displaystyle = ab\displaystyle \frac{a}{b}
  • Cross-multiplying a proportion
    a⋅d\displaystyle a\cdot d =\displaystyle = b⋅c\displaystyle b\cdot cab=cd\displaystyle \frac{a}{b}=\frac{c}{d}
  • Quantities in the ratio a:b\displaystyle a:b – k\displaystyle k the size of one part
    ak:bk\displaystyle ak:bk =\displaystyle = a:b\displaystyle a:b
  • Directly proportional quantities – the ratio k\displaystyle k stays the same (the unit price, for one)
    yx=k\displaystyle \frac{y}{x}=k

Scale

  • At the scale 1:n\displaystyle 1:n – a\displaystyle a the length in the drawing, b\displaystyle b the real length, in the same unit
    b\displaystyle b =\displaystyle = a⋅n\displaystyle a\cdot n
  • An area at the scale 1:n\displaystyle 1:n – it grows n2\displaystyle n^2 times, not n\displaystyle n times
    Sb\displaystyle S_b =\displaystyle = Sa⋅n2\displaystyle S_a\cdot n^2

Percent and percent change

  • p\displaystyle p percent are p\displaystyle p hundredths
    p%\displaystyle p\% =\displaystyle = p100\displaystyle \frac{p}{100}
  • A rise of p%\displaystyle p\% – a\displaystyle a the amount before the change, b\displaystyle b the amount after it
    b\displaystyle b =\displaystyle = (100%+p%)⋅a\displaystyle (100\%+p\%)\cdot a
  • A fall of p%\displaystyle p\% – a\displaystyle a the amount before the change, b\displaystyle b the amount after it
    b\displaystyle b =\displaystyle = (100%−p%)⋅a\displaystyle (100\%-p\%)\cdot a
  • The percent change – a part of the amount before the change
    p%=b−aa\displaystyle p\%=\frac{b-a}{a}
  • Two changes one after the other – a rise of p%\displaystyle p\%, then a rise of q%\displaystyle q\% (for a fall: minus instead of plus)
    c\displaystyle c =\displaystyle = (100%+p%)⋅(100%+q%)⋅a\displaystyle (100\%+p\%)\cdot(100\%+q\%)\cdot a
