Finance and economics, grade 10 (3 units)

Tenth-grade finance and economics, 3 study units.Subjects

The topics, in order:

  • conclusions and decisions from economic information: a price table, a chart of expenses, the formula of a plan; the unit price;
  • a linear model: a fixed cost and a cost per unit, and comparing two plans;
  • buying and selling: discounts and VAT, the price before a change and after it;
  • profit and loss, and the break-even point;
  • wages: hourly pay, overtime, gross and net, the pay slip and a monthly budget;
  • statistical processing of economic information: the mean and median of salaries, charts of prices.

Two kinds of lessons:

  • learning lessons – an explanation, solved examples and a few questions to try;
  • practice lessons – questions only.

How the page works: Using a page.

  1. Economic information: a table, a chart and a formulaLearningConclusions and decisions from a price table, a chart of expenses and the formula of a plan: what is cheaper, what share each expense is, what you pay for what you use.
  2. The unit price and comparing offersLearningThe price per litre, per 100 grams or per item: how to compare packs of different sizes and offers such as "buy one get one free" and "3 for 2", and decide what is worth buying.
  3. Practice: economic information and comparing offersPracticePrice tables, a chart of bills, the formula of a plan, the unit price and offers.
  4. A linear model: a fixed cost and a cost per unitLearningA price made of a fixed cost and a cost for every unit is a straight line: the formula y=mx+b, the slope is the price per unit and b the fixed cost; and from two points of a table to the formula.
  5. Comparing two plansLearningTwo price plans are two lines: where they meet the plans cost the same, and on each side of that point one of them is cheaper; you find it on the graph and by an equation, and decide by your use.
  6. Practice: a linear model and comparing plansPracticeA fixed cost and a cost per unit, a formula from a table and from a graph, where two plans' lines meet, and choosing the cheaper plan.
  7. Buying and selling: discounts and VATLearningA discount and VAT in one multiplication, the price before VAT and before a discount by an equation, two discounts one after another, and offers like "the second at half price".
  8. Profit and lossLearningCost, selling price, revenue, profit and loss; the profit percent out of the cost, the selling price for a wanted profit, and selling at a loss.
  9. The break-even pointLearningFixed costs and a cost per unit against the revenue: two lines, and where they meet is the break-even point; the profit as a line, and how many to sell for a wanted profit.
  10. Practice: buying and selling, profit and lossPracticeDiscounts and VAT, the price before a change, two discounts, the profit percent, profit and loss and the break-even point.
  11. Hourly pay and overtimeLearningPay is the hourly wage times the number of hours; an overtime hour is paid at 125% or 150%; and the number of hours to work for a given sum.
  12. The pay slip and a monthly budgetLearningGross pay, the deductions and net pay on the pay slip; a monthly budget – income, expenses and savings, and a pie chart of the expenses.
  13. The mean and median of economic dataLearningOne very high salary pulls the mean up, and the median describes a usual salary better; the mean from a frequency table; a line chart of prices, and a chart whose axis does not start at 0.
  14. Practice: wages and salary dataPracticeHourly pay and overtime, the pay slip, a monthly budget, and the mean and median of salaries.
  15. Review: finance and economicsPracticeQuestions on all the topics: economic information and the unit price, a linear model and comparing plans, discounts and VAT, profit and loss and the break-even point, wages, the pay slip, and the mean and median.
