Comparing two plans
A mobile company offers two monthly plans:
In plan A you pay 30 ₪ and 0.4 ₪ for every minute of calls.
In plan B you pay 50 ₪ and 0.15 ₪ for every minute of calls.
| Minutes a month | 0 | 40 | 80 | 120 | 160 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Plan A (₪) | 30 | 46 | 62 | 78 | 94 |
| Plan B (₪) | 50 | 56 | 62 | 68 | 74 |
- In plan A the fixed cost is low, but every minute is dear.
- In plan B the fixed cost is high, but every minute is cheap.
- At 80 minutes the two plans cost the same, 62 ₪.
Each plan is a line: plan A is , and plan B is (the dashed one).
- At the meeting point, , the two plans cost the same.
- To its left plan A’s line is lower: up to 80 minutes plan A is cheaper.
- To its right plan B’s line is lower: above 80 minutes plan B is cheaper.
- Plan A’s line is steeper, because its slope – the price per minute – is greater.
An equation finds the meeting point exactly: the price of plan A equals the price of plan B.
The example below solves the equation of the two plans:
- We subtract and 30 from both sides: .
- We divide by 0.25: minutes.
- The price: ₪.
The better plan depends on the number of minutes you talk:
- If you talk less than 80 minutes a month – plan A is for you.
- If you talk more than 80 minutes – plan B is for you.
- If you talk about two hours, 120 minutes, plan B costs 68 ₪ instead of 78 ₪ – a saving of 10 ₪ a month.
Two taxi companies in town:
“Or” taxis charge 10 ₪ at the start of the ride and 5 ₪ for every kilometre.
“Derech” taxis charge 25 ₪ at the start of the ride and 3.5 ₪ for every kilometre.
On the graph, is the number of kilometres and the price in shekels; “Derech” is the dashed line.
Mark where the lines meet on the graph.
For a ride of how many kilometres do the two companies cost the same?
Solve the equation.
Which company is better for a ride of 6 km?
And which for a ride of 15 km?
Two companies hire out a car by the day:
Company A charges 150 ₪ a day and 0.5 ₪ for every kilometre.
Company B charges 100 ₪ a day and 0.9 ₪ for every kilometre.
Write an equation and solve it: for how many kilometres a day do the two companies cost the same?
The Mizrahi family is planning a day trip of 200 km.
What will it pay in each company?
Which company should it hire from?

There are two ways to pay for calls abroad:
Without a package you pay 0.5 ₪ for every minute.
With a package you pay 20 ₪ a month and 0.3 ₪ for every minute.
is the number of minutes a month, and the price in shekels.
Write the formulas of the two ways on the graph board.
Write an equation and solve it: for how many minutes a month do the two ways cost the same?
Itai’s grandmother talks with her granddaughter abroad for about an hour a month.
Which is better for her: a package or no package?
In one plan you pay 60 ₪ a month, and talk as much as you like.
In another plan you pay 20 ₪ a month and 0.25 ₪ for every minute.
From how many minutes a month is the unlimited plan cheaper?
