A linear model: a fixed cost and a cost per unit

A fixed cost and a cost per unit

In many services the price is made of two parts:

  • a fixed cost – an amount paid once, whatever the quantity;
  • a cost per unit – an amount paid for every unit: every kilometre, every minute, every hour.

A taxi charges 12 ₪ at the start of the ride, and 4 ₪ for every kilometre:

Kilometres0123510
Price (₪)121620243252

Every kilometre adds the same amount to the price, 4 ₪.

The formula of a linear model

If x\displaystyle x is the number of kilometres and y\displaystyle y the price in shekels, the price of the ride is

y=4x+12y=4x+12
  • 4x\displaystyle 4x – the cost of x\displaystyle x kilometres, 4 ₪ each.
  • 12 – the fixed cost.

A price described this way is a linear model: m\displaystyle m is the cost per unit, and b\displaystyle b the fixed cost.

y=mx+b\displaystyle y=mx+b
The graph of the model: a line

The graph of the price of the ride is a straight line. Every point on it is a ride: x\displaystyle x its kilometres and y\displaystyle y its price.

y=4x+12\displaystyle y=4x+12
A=(0,12)\displaystyle A=(0,12)
B=(5,32)\displaystyle B=(5,32)
  • The line meets the y\displaystyle y-axis at the point (0,12)\displaystyle (0,12): a ride of 0 km costs 12 ₪ – the fixed cost, b\displaystyle b.
  • With every step of a kilometre to the right the line goes up 4 ₪ – the cost per unit, m\displaystyle m.
  • (5,32)\displaystyle (5,32): a ride of 5 km costs 4⋅5+12=32\displaystyle {4\cdot5+12}={32} ₪.
The slope: the price per unit

The slope of the line, m\displaystyle m, is how much y\displaystyle y grows when x\displaystyle x grows by 1. In a model of a price the slope is the price per unit.

Two points on the line give the slope: the change in the price, divided by the change in the quantity. For the ride, from the point (2,20)\displaystyle (2,20) to the point (5,32)\displaystyle (5,32):

m=32−205−2=123=4m=\frac{32-20}{5-2}=\frac{12}{3}=4
m=y2−y1x2−x1\displaystyle m=\frac{y_2-y_1}{x_2-x_1}
From the table to the formula
Check: 90⋅5+150=600\displaystyle {90\cdot5+150}={600}.

A plumber charges a fixed call-out fee and an amount for every hour of work.
A two-hour job cost 330 ₪.
A five-hour job cost 600 ₪.

The example below finds the price per hour and the call-out fee, and writes the formula:

  • The price per hour is the slope: m=600−3305−2=2703=90\displaystyle {m}={\frac{600-330}{5-2}}={\frac{270}{3}}={90} ₪.
  • The call-out fee: for two hours, 330=90⋅2+b\displaystyle {330}={90\cdot2+b}, so b=330−180=150\displaystyle {b}={330-180}={150} ₪.
  • The formula: y=90x+150\displaystyle {y}={90x+150}.
