The plane and space, grade 10 (3 units)
Lengths, routes and areas in the world around us – at the 3-unit level.Subjects
The topics, in order:
- perimeters: fencing a plot, a frame, the circumference of a circle and a running track;
- routes: the length of a route on a map and in a neighbourhood, the shortest route, a shortcut by Pythagoras’ theorem, distance, speed and time;
- areas: the rectangle, triangle, parallelogram, trapezoid and disc, composite and irregular shapes, units of area and estimating;
- tilings: how many tiles are needed, waste and cost, regular tilings;
- all of it together: planning a room and a garden – what is worth it, and estimating.
There are two kinds of lessons:
- learning lessons – an explanation, solved examples and exercises;
- practice lessons – questions only.
How the page works: Using a page.
- Perimeter: fencing a plot and framesLearningThe perimeter of a polygon; missing sides of a stepped plot; a fence with a gate and a price per metre; how many posts a fence needs.
- The circumference and a running trackLearningThe circumference from the diameter and from the radius; a semicircle and an arched window; a running track – two straights and two semicircles; why the outer lane is longer; from the circumference to the diameter.
- Practice: perimetersPracticeThe perimeter of polygons and circles; a side from the perimeter; a frame and a fence with a price; stepped shapes and a notch; posts for a fence; a running track and a wheel.
- Routes: the length of a route on a map and in a neighbourhoodLearningA route and its length; the shortest route on a road map; a route in the streets of a grid-shaped neighbourhood – how many shortest routes there are, and their length.
- A shortcut: Pythagoras' theoremLearningA reminder: Pythagoras' theorem in a right triangle; walking diagonally against walking along the sides; a straight line on squared paper; finding a leg.
- Distance, speed and time: comparing routesLearningSpeed is distance divided by time; working out the distance and the time; time in hours and in minutes; a long fast route against a short slow one; a shortcut that does not save time.
- Practice: routesPracticeThe shortest route on a map; routes in the streets of a neighbourhood; a shortcut by Pythagoras; distance, speed and time; a bus against a train.
- Areas: the rectangle, triangle, parallelogram and trapezoidLearningArea and square units; the formulas of the rectangle, triangle, parallelogram and trapezoid; painting a wall with a door; how many cans of paint to buy; a price per square metre.
- The area of a disc, composite shapes and irregular shapesLearningThe area of a disc; a large pizza against two small ones; the area of a composite shape – by cutting or by completing; estimating an irregular area on a grid of squares.
- Units of area and converting them; estimatingLearningA square metre is 10,000 cm²; the dunam and the km²; converting through the lengths; the area of a tile in m²; estimating an area before working it out.
- Practice: areasPracticeAreas of polygons and discs; a flat's plan on squared paper; painting a room; a field inside a track; a ring-shaped path; units of area; estimating an irregular area; a price per m².
- Tiling a floor: how many tiles, waste and costLearningHow many tiles fit along the length and the width; cut tiles; waste – how much to add; boxes of tiles; skirting along the walls; comparing the prices of two tiles.
- Regular tilingsLearningA regular polygon; the sum of the angles of a polygon and the angle of a regular polygon; 360° around a vertex; only the triangle, the square and the hexagon tile alone; a tiling of two polygons – octagons and squares.
- Planning a room and a garden: what is worth it, and estimatingLearningThe steps of planning; two offers for a fence – when each is worth it; the plan of a garden: a fence, grass, paving and a pond; estimating before calculating.
- Review: the plane and space, grade 10PracticeQuestions from the whole course: perimeters, routes, areas, tilings and planning.
