The plane and space, grade 12 (3 units)
Solids in space and spatial vision, grade 12, 3 study units.Subjects
The topics, in order:
- solids in space and their parts: faces, edges, vertices, base, lateral surface and height;
- the volume and surface area of the box, the cube, the prism and the cylinder – a swimming pool, a water tank, paint for a room, packaging, concrete for a pillar; litres, cubic metres and cost;
- the volume and surface area of the pyramid, the cone and the sphere;
- diagonals and distances in solids by Pythagoras’ theorem, and angles in solids by trigonometry;
- spatial vision: views from the front, the side and above, building maps and counting cubes;
- nets, and the shortest path on a solid’s surface;
- cross-sections of solids, and drawing a solid in space.
Two kinds of lessons:
- learning lessons – an explanation, solved examples and a few questions to try;
- practice lessons – questions only.
How the page works: Using a page.
- Solids in space and their partsLearningThe box, the cube, the prism, the cylinder, the pyramid, the cone and the sphere; faces, edges and vertices, base, lateral surface and height.
- The box and the cube: volume and surface areaLearningThe volume and surface area of a box and a cube; litres and cubic metres; a pool, an aquarium, paint for a room, packaging and a water tank.
- The prism: volume and surface areaLearningThe volume of a prism – the base area times the height; the lateral and surface area; a tent, a pool with a sloping floor, a concrete ramp and a shed.
- The cylinder: volume and surface areaLearningThe volume of a cylinder, the curved surface that unrolls into a rectangle, and the surface area; calculating with π and rounding; a water tank, a concrete pillar, a can's label and a round pool.
- Practice: the box, the prism and the cylinderPracticeVolume and surface area in real contexts: a container, an Olympic pool, a tent, a water tank and pillars; litres, cubic metres and cost.
- The pyramid and the cone: volume and surface areaLearningVolume – a third of the prism and the cylinder; the height of a side face and the slant height by Pythagoras' theorem; the surface area; the glass pyramid, a pile of sand, a tent and a roof.
- The sphere: volume and surface areaLearningThe radius, the diameter and the great circle; the volume and surface area of a sphere and a hemisphere; a basketball, packaging, a gas tank, a dome and tennis balls.
- Diagonals and distances in solidsLearningPythagoras' theorem in space: the diagonal of a box and a cube, a side edge of a pyramid, distances in a room; a stick in a crate, a pipe in a lorry and a lamp on the ceiling.
- Angles in solids: trigonometry in spaceLearningSine, cosine and tangent in a right-angled triangle inside a solid: the angle between a box's diagonal and its base, between a pyramid's face and its base, and between a cone's slant height and its base.
- Practice: the pyramid, the cone, the sphere, diagonals and anglesPracticeThe Great Pyramid of Giza, a party hat, a balloon, a room, a silo and a tent: volume, surface area, distances and angles.
- Spatial vision: views and building mapsLearningA building of cubes: the view from the front, from the right and from above; the building map; counting cubes from a map and from views.
- Nets and the shortest path on a solidLearningNets of a cube, opposite faces and a die; nets of a cylinder and a cone; the shortest path on the surface of a box – unfold it and draw a straight line.
- Cross-sections of solids and drawing in spaceLearningA cross-section of a cube, a cylinder, a cone and a sphere – its shape and its area; drawing a box and a building of cubes in space on squared paper.
- Practice: spatial visionPracticeBuilding maps and views, counting cubes, opposite faces in a net, the net of a cylinder, the shortest path on a box, cross-sections and drawing in space.
- Review: solids in space and spatial visionPracticeQuestions on every topic: the parts of a solid, volume and surface area, diagonals and angles, building maps, the shortest path and cross-sections.
