Diagonals and distances in solids

The diagonal of a box

abced

The diagonal of a box, d\displaystyle d, joins a vertex to the vertex farthest from it, through the inside of the box. It is found in two right-angled triangles:

  • The base’s diagonal, e\displaystyle e, is the hypotenuse of a triangle with legs a\displaystyle a and b\displaystyle b: e2=a2+b2\displaystyle {e^2}={a^2+b^2}.
  • The edge c\displaystyle c is perpendicular to the base, so to e\displaystyle e too. The box’s diagonal is the hypotenuse of a triangle with legs e\displaystyle e and c\displaystyle c: d2=e2+c2\displaystyle {d^2}={e^2+c^2}.
d2\displaystyle d^2 =\displaystyle = a2+b2+c2\displaystyle a^2+b^2+c^2

In a cube the three dimensions are equal, and d2=3a2\displaystyle {d^2}={3a^2}:

d\displaystyle d =\displaystyle = a3\displaystyle a\sqrt{3}
Example: a cable in a room

A room’s floor is a rectangle of 5 m by 4 m, and the room is 3 m high.
A straight cable is stretched from a corner of the floor to the corner of the ceiling farthest from it.
How long is the cable?

d=52+42+32=50≈7.07d=\sqrt{5^2+4^2+3^2}=\sqrt{50}\approx7.07

The cable is about 7.07 m long.

A side edge of a pyramid

hsOa

In a square pyramid too there is a right-angled triangle: the height h\displaystyle h, the segment from O\displaystyle O to a vertex of the base, and the side edge s\displaystyle s – the hypotenuse.

  • The segment from O\displaystyle O to the vertex is half the diagonal of the base. The diagonal of a square with side a\displaystyle a is a2\displaystyle a\sqrt{2}, so the segment is a22\displaystyle \frac{a\sqrt{2}}{2}, and its square is a22\displaystyle \frac{a^2}{2}.
s2\displaystyle s^2 =\displaystyle = h2+a22\displaystyle h^2+\frac{a^2}{2}
Exercise 1

A box is 30 cm by 20 cm, and 10 cm high.
Can a straight stick 35 cm long be put inside it, with the lid closed?
