Extremum problems

The steps of solving an extremum problem

An extremum problem looks for the greatest or the least value of a quantity – a profit, an area, a distance – written as a function of one variable.

  • The variable: choose one quantity and call it x\displaystyle x.
  • The function: write the quantity you are looking for in terms of x\displaystyle x alone; write every other quantity in terms of x\displaystyle x first.
  • The domain: the values x\displaystyle x can take – a positive length, a point on the graph, a price that is not negative.
  • The derivative: differentiate and solve f′(x)=0\displaystyle {f'(x)}={0}; keep only the solutions in the domain.
  • The kind of extremum: from a table of the signs of f′(x)\displaystyle f'(x). On a closed domain, compare the values at the ends of the domain too.
  • The answer: answer what was asked – sometimes x\displaystyle x, sometimes the greatest value itself.
A problem of numbers

The sum of two positive numbers is 12.
We look for the numbers for which the square of the first times the second is the greatest.

The solution below calls the first number x\displaystyle x, writes the second in terms of it, and finds the maximum of the product.

  • The second number: 12−x\displaystyle 12-x, and the domain: 0<x<12\displaystyle 0<x<12.
  • The product: f(x)=x2(12−x)=12x2−x3\displaystyle {f(x)}={x^2(12-x)}={12x^2-x^3}.
  • The derivative: f′(x)=24x−3x2=3x(8−x)\displaystyle {f'(x)}={24x-3x^2}={3x(8-x)}, which is 0 when x=0\displaystyle {x}={0} (not in the domain) or x=8\displaystyle {x}={8}.
0<x<8\displaystyle 0<x<8x=8\displaystyle {x}={8}8<x<12\displaystyle 8<x<12
f′(x)\displaystyle f'(x)+0−
f(x)\displaystyle f(x)increasing256decreasing
  • The numbers: 8 and 4, and the greatest product: 82⋅4=256\displaystyle {8^2\cdot4}={256}.
An economic problem: the daily profit

A factory makes a product that costs 20 ₪ an item to make.
At a price of 40 ₪ an item the factory sells 100 items a day.
For every shekel taken off the price, the factory sells 10 more items a day.
x\displaystyle x – the amount taken off the price, in shekels.

The solution below writes the daily profit as a function of x\displaystyle x and finds its maximum.

  • The price: 40−x\displaystyle 40-x, and the profit on each item: (40−x)−20=20−x\displaystyle {(40-x)-20}={20-x}.
  • The number of items a day: 100+10x\displaystyle 100+10x.
  • The daily profit: P(x)=(20−x)(100+10x)=2000+100x−10x2\displaystyle {P(x)}={(20-x)(100+10x)}={2000+100x-10x^2}, on the domain 0≤x≤20\displaystyle 0\leq x\leq20 (beyond 20 every item is sold at a loss).
  • P′(x)=100−20x\displaystyle {P'(x)}={100-20x}, which is 0 when x=5\displaystyle {x}={5}; to the left of 5 the derivative is positive, to the right negative – a maximum.
  • At the ends of the domain: P(0)=2000\displaystyle {P(0)}={2000}, P(20)=0\displaystyle {P(20)}={0} – both less than P(5)\displaystyle P(5).
P(5)=15⋅150=2250P(5)=15\cdot150=2250
  • The factory should take 5 ₪ off the price, down to 35 ₪, and the greatest daily profit is 2,250 ₪.
A triangle between two graphs

The board shows the graphs of f(x)=−x2+9\displaystyle {f(x)}={-x^2+9} and g(x)=(x−3)2\displaystyle {g(x)}={(x-3)^2}.
The point A\displaystyle A is on the graph of f\displaystyle f, in the first quadrant, between the points where the graphs meet.
A line through A\displaystyle A parallel to the y\displaystyle y-axis meets the graph of g\displaystyle g at the point B\displaystyle B.
A line through A\displaystyle A parallel to the x\displaystyle x-axis meets the graph of f\displaystyle f at the point C\displaystyle C.
t\displaystyle t – the x\displaystyle x-coordinate of A\displaystyle A.

The solution below writes the area of the triangle ABC\displaystyle ABC in terms of t\displaystyle t, and finds the t\displaystyle t for which the area is the greatest. The board shows the case t=2\displaystyle {t}={2}.

f(x)=−x2+9\displaystyle f(x)=-x^{2}+9
g(x)=(x−3)2\displaystyle g(x)=(x-3)^{2}
A=(2,5)\displaystyle A=(2,5)
B=(2,1)\displaystyle B=(2,1)
C=(−2,5)\displaystyle C=(-2,5)
  • The graphs meet where −x2+9=(x−3)2\displaystyle {-x^2+9}={(x-3)^2}, that is 2x2−6x=0\displaystyle {2x^2-6x}={0}: at x=0\displaystyle {x}={0} and at x=3\displaystyle {x}={3}. So 0<t<3\displaystyle 0<t<3.
  • A=(t,9−t2)\displaystyle {A}={(t,9-t^2)}, B=(t,(t−3)2)\displaystyle {B}={(t,(t-3)^2)}, and C=(−t,9−t2)\displaystyle {C}={(-t,9-t^2)} – the point symmetric to A\displaystyle A about the y\displaystyle y-axis.
  • AB=9−t2−(t−3)2=6t−2t2\displaystyle {AB}={9-t^2-(t-3)^2}={6t-2t^2}, and AC=2t\displaystyle {AC}={2t}; the angle at A\displaystyle A is a right angle.
  • The area: S(t)=12⋅2t⋅(6t−2t2)=6t2−2t3\displaystyle {S(t)}={\frac{1}{2}\cdot2t\cdot(6t-2t^2)}={6t^2-2t^3}.
  • S′(t)=12t−6t2=6t(2−t)\displaystyle {S'(t)}={12t-6t^2}={6t(2-t)}, which is 0 inside the domain only when t=2\displaystyle {t}={2}: positive to the left, negative to the right – a maximum.
  • The greatest area: S(2)=24−16=8\displaystyle {S(2)}={24-16}={8}.
A parallelogram inscribed in a rectangle

In the rectangle ABCD\displaystyle ABCD: AB=18\displaystyle {AB}={18} cm, BC=10\displaystyle {BC}={10} cm.
The parallelogram PQTE\displaystyle PQTE is inscribed in the rectangle: P\displaystyle P on AD\displaystyle AD, Q\displaystyle Q on AB\displaystyle AB, T\displaystyle T on BC\displaystyle BC and E\displaystyle E on CD\displaystyle CD.
AP=TC\displaystyle {AP}={TC}, and AQ=EC=3AP\displaystyle {AQ}={EC}={3AP}.

The solution below puts AP=x\displaystyle {AP}={x}, writes the area of the parallelogram in terms of x\displaystyle x, and finds the x\displaystyle x for which the area is the greatest.

  • AQ=EC=3x\displaystyle {AQ}={EC}={3x}; for Q\displaystyle Q to be on AB\displaystyle AB we need 3x≤18\displaystyle 3x\leq18, so 0<x≤6\displaystyle 0<x\leq6.
  • The area of the parallelogram is the area of the rectangle less four right-angled triangles. The triangles at the corners A\displaystyle A and C\displaystyle C are congruent, and so are those at B\displaystyle B and D\displaystyle D.
  • At the corner A\displaystyle A: the legs x\displaystyle x and 3x\displaystyle 3x, the area 3x22\displaystyle \frac{3x^2}{2}. At the corner B\displaystyle B: the legs 18−3x\displaystyle 18-3x and 10−x\displaystyle 10-x.
S(x)=180−2⋅3x22−(18−3x)(10−x)=48x−6x2S(x)=180-2\cdot\frac{3x^2}{2}-(18-3x)(10-x)=48x-6x^2
  • S′(x)=48−12x\displaystyle {S'(x)}={48-12x}, which is 0 when x=4\displaystyle {x}={4}, inside the domain: positive to the left, negative to the right – a maximum.
  • AP=4\displaystyle {AP}={4} cm, and the greatest area: S(4)=192−96=96\displaystyle {S(4)}={192-96}={96} cm².
