The rate of change and the derivative at a point
The rate of change and the derivative at a point
A small pool is filled from a tap. At first it holds 20 litres, and every minute 5 litres flow in.
– the amount of water in litres after minutes.
| (minutes) | 0 | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| (litres) | 20 | 25 | 30 | 35 | 40 |
- Every minute the amount grows by the same number, 5 litres: the rate of change is constant – 5 litres a minute.
- The graph of a function with a constant rate of change is a line, and the rate of change is its slope.
A car sets off and speeds up. – the distance in metres it covers in the first seconds.
| (seconds) | 0 | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| (metres) | 0 | 1 | 4 | 9 | 16 |
- In the first second the car covers one metre, in the second second 3 metres, in the third 5, in the fourth 7.
- Every second it covers more: the rate of change varies – the speed grows.
- The graph is a parabola, not a line: it has no single slope.
The average rate of change between two points is the change in divided by the change in :
The example below works out the car’s average speed between and :
- The car covered 8 metres in 2 seconds: on average 4 metres a second.
- On the board: the dashed line passes through and . The segment is a chord of the graph.
The average rate of change is the slope of the chord: the slope of the dashed line is 4.
The average speed does not say what the speed was exactly at the moment . To know it, bring the second point closer to the first.
The second point: , where is a small number other than 0.
| 1 | 0.1 | 0.01 | 0.001 | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| The average speed | 3 | 2.1 | 2.01 | 2.001 |
- Dividing by is allowed, because .
- As gets closer to 0, the average speed gets closer to 2.
- So at the moment the car’s speed is 2 metres a second: this is the instantaneous rate of change.
The instantaneous rate of change of a function at a point is called the derivative of at , written :
- is read “the limit as tends to 0”: the number the expression gets closer to as gets closer to 0.
- On the board: , the line of the chord from to (the dashed one, slope 3), and a solid line the chords get closer to.
- As gets smaller, the second point comes closer to , and the chord turns about .
- The line the chords get closer to is the tangent to the graph at : it touches the graph at .
- The derivative at a point is the slope of the tangent: here , and the tangent is .
.
The example below finds by the definition.
- As gets closer to 0, gets closer to 6.
- So : the slope of the tangent to the graph at the point is 6.
