The derivative of a square root function

The derivative of a square root function

The domain of f(x)\displaystyle \sqrt{f(x)}

The function y=f(x)\displaystyle {y}={\sqrt{f(x)}} is defined only where f(x)≥0\displaystyle f(x)\geq0, because a negative number has no square root.

  • f(x)=12−3x\displaystyle {f(x)}={\sqrt{12-3x}}: solving 12−3x≥0\displaystyle 12-3x\geq0 gives x≤4\displaystyle x\leq4.
  • f(x)=x2−4x+3\displaystyle {f(x)}={\sqrt{x^2-4x+3}}: the roots of x2−4x+3=0\displaystyle {x^2-4x+3}={0} are 1 and 3, and the parabola opens upwards – it is above the x\displaystyle x-axis on both sides of the roots. The domain: x≤1\displaystyle x\leq1 or x≥3\displaystyle x\geq3.
  • At an end of the domain the value of the function is 0: 0=0\displaystyle {\sqrt{0}}={0}.
The derivative of x\displaystyle \sqrt{x}

The derivative of x\displaystyle \sqrt{x} is 12x\displaystyle \frac{1}{2\sqrt{x}}.

(x)′\displaystyle (\sqrt{x})' =\displaystyle = 12x\displaystyle \frac{1}{2\sqrt{x}}x>0\displaystyle x>0

The calculation below finds it from the slope of the chord from x\displaystyle x to x+h\displaystyle x+h. We multiply the numerator and the denominator by x+h+x\displaystyle \sqrt{x+h}+\sqrt{x}, so that the numerator becomes a difference of squares:

x+h−xh=(x+h)−xh(x+h+x)=1x+h+x\frac{\sqrt{x+h}-\sqrt{x}}{h}=\frac{(x+h)-x}{h\left(\sqrt{x+h}+\sqrt{x}\right)}=\frac{1}{\sqrt{x+h}+\sqrt{x}}
  • As h\displaystyle h gets closer to 0, x+h\displaystyle \sqrt{x+h} gets closer to x\displaystyle \sqrt{x}, and the slope gets closer to 12x\displaystyle \frac{1}{2\sqrt{x}}.
  • At x=0\displaystyle {x}={0} the function has no derivative: the tangent at (0,0)\displaystyle (0,0) is the y\displaystyle y-axis, a line upright to the x\displaystyle x-axis, which has no slope.
The derivative of f(x)\displaystyle \sqrt{f(x)}

f(x)\displaystyle \sqrt{f(x)} is a composite function: the outer function is the root, and the inner one is f(x)\displaystyle f(x). So we differentiate the root and multiply by the derivative of the inner one:

(f(x))′\displaystyle (\sqrt{f(x)})' =\displaystyle = f′(x)2f(x)\displaystyle \frac{f'(x)}{2\sqrt{f(x)}}f(x)>0\displaystyle f(x)>0

The examples below differentiate two such functions:

(x2+9)′=2x2x2+9=xx2+9\left(\sqrt{x^2+9}\right)'=\frac{2x}{2\sqrt{x^2+9}}=\frac{x}{\sqrt{x^2+9}}(12−3x)′=−3212−3x\left(\sqrt{12-3x}\right)'=\frac{-3}{2\sqrt{12-3x}}
Sums and products of a root and a polynomial

In a sum each term is differentiated on its own; in a product we use the rule for the derivative of a product.

(2x+1+x2)′=222x+1+2x=12x+1+2x\left(\sqrt{2x+1}+x^2\right)'=\frac{2}{2\sqrt{2x+1}}+2x=\frac{1}{\sqrt{2x+1}}+2x

The example below differentiates xx+5\displaystyle x\sqrt{x+5} as a product, and brings the result to a common denominator:

(xx+5)′=1⋅x+5+x⋅12x+5=2(x+5)+x2x+5=3x+102x+5\left(x\sqrt{x+5}\right)'=1\cdot\sqrt{x+5}+x\cdot\frac{1}{2\sqrt{x+5}}=\frac{2(x+5)+x}{2\sqrt{x+5}}=\frac{3x+10}{2\sqrt{x+5}}
  • x+5\displaystyle \sqrt{x+5} is multiplied by 2x+5\displaystyle 2\sqrt{x+5} to bring it over the denominator, which gives 2(x+5)\displaystyle 2(x+5).
  • A common denominator helps later: the equation f′(x)=0\displaystyle {f'(x)}={0} is solved by the numerator alone.
The tangent to the graph of a root function

The tangent to the graph of a square root function is found just as for a polynomial: the point, the slope m=f′(x1)\displaystyle {m}={f'(x_1)}, and then y−y1=m(x−x1)\displaystyle {y-y_1}={m(x-x_1)}.

The functions are f(x)=12−3x\displaystyle {f(x)}={\sqrt{12-3x}} and g(x)=−f(x)\displaystyle {g(x)}={-f(x)}.
The example below finds the tangent to each graph at the point where x=1\displaystyle {x}={1}, and the point where the tangents meet.

  • f(1)=9=3\displaystyle {f(1)}={\sqrt{9}}={3}, and the slope is f′(1)=−32⋅3=−12\displaystyle {f'(1)}={\frac{-3}{2\cdot3}}={-\frac{1}{2}}.
  • The tangent to the graph of f\displaystyle f: y−3=−12(x−1)\displaystyle {y-3}={-\frac{1}{2}(x-1)}, that is y=−12x+312\displaystyle {y}={-\frac{1}{2}x+3\frac{1}{2}}.
  • The graph of g\displaystyle g is the reflection of the graph of f\displaystyle f in the x\displaystyle x-axis, so the tangent is reflected too: g(1)=−3\displaystyle {g(1)}={-3}, g′(1)=12\displaystyle {g'(1)}={\frac{1}{2}}, and the tangent is y=12x−312\displaystyle {y}={\frac{1}{2}x-3\frac{1}{2}}.
f(x)=12−3x\displaystyle f(x)=\sqrt{12-3x}
g(x)=−12−3x\displaystyle g(x)=-\sqrt{12-3x}
y=−12x+72\displaystyle y=-\frac{1}{2}x+\frac{7}{2}
y=12x−72\displaystyle y=\frac{1}{2}x-\frac{7}{2}
A=(7,0)\displaystyle A=(7,0)
  • The tangents meet where −12x+312=12x−312\displaystyle {-\frac{1}{2}x+3\frac{1}{2}}={\frac{1}{2}x-3\frac{1}{2}}, that is at x=7\displaystyle {x}={7}.
  • The meeting point (7,0)\displaystyle (7,0) is on the x\displaystyle x-axis, the axis of symmetry of the two graphs.
