The antiderivative

The antiderivative

The inverse of differentiating

An antiderivative of f(x)\displaystyle f(x) is a function F(x)\displaystyle F(x) whose derivative is f(x)\displaystyle f(x): F′(x)=f(x)\displaystyle {F'(x)}={f(x)}.
For example, for f(x)=2x\displaystyle {f(x)}={2x}:

  • F(x)=x2\displaystyle {F(x)}={x^2} is an antiderivative, since (x2)′=2x\displaystyle {(x^2)'}={2x};
  • x2+5\displaystyle x^2+5 and x2−3\displaystyle x^2-3 are antiderivatives too: the derivative of a constant is 0.

All the antiderivatives of f\displaystyle f are F(x)+C\displaystyle F(x)+C, C\displaystyle C any number – the constant of integration. Their graphs are the same graph, shifted up or down.

The indefinite integral

All the antiderivatives of f\displaystyle f are written as an indefinite integral:

∫f(x) dx=F(x)+C\displaystyle \int f(x)\,dx=F(x)+C
  • ∫\displaystyle \int – the integral sign;
  • dx\displaystyle dx – the variable is x\displaystyle x;
  • for example, ∫2x dx=x2+C\displaystyle {\int2x\,dx}={x^2+C}.

The check: differentiate the answer, and the function under the integral sign must come out.

The rules of integration

Each rule is a rule of differentiation, the other way round:

∫xn dx\displaystyle \int x^{n}\,dx =\displaystyle = xn+1n+1+C\displaystyle \frac{x^{n+1}}{n+1}+Cn≠−1\displaystyle n\neq-1
  • a number multiplying the function stays: ∫5x2 dx=5x33+C\displaystyle {\int5x^2\,dx}={\frac{5x^3}{3}+C};
  • the integral of a sum is the sum of the integrals;
  • ∫k dx=kx+C\displaystyle {\int k\,dx}={kx+C}.

And from the derivative (−ca(ax+b))′=c(ax+b)2\displaystyle {\left(-\frac{c}{a(ax+b)}\right)'}={\frac{c}{(ax+b)^2}}:

∫c(ax+b)2 dx\displaystyle \int\frac{c}{(ax+b)^{2}}\,dx =\displaystyle = −ca(ax+b)+C\displaystyle -\frac{c}{a(ax+b)}+C

For example, ∫6(2x+1)2 dx=−62(2x+1)+C=−32x+1+C\displaystyle {\int\frac{6}{(2x+1)^2}\,dx}={-\frac{6}{2(2x+1)}+C}={-\frac{3}{2x+1}+C}.

Example

In the example below we work out ∫(3x2−4x+1) dx\displaystyle \int(3x^2-4x+1)\,dx term by term:

∫(3x2−4x+1) dx=3x33−4x22+x+C=x3−2x2+x+C\int(3x^2-4x+1)\,dx=\frac{3x^3}{3}-\frac{4x^2}{2}+x+C=x^3-2x^2+x+C

The check: (x3−2x2+x+C)′=3x2−4x+1\displaystyle {(x^3-2x^2+x+C)'}={3x^2-4x+1}.

An antiderivative through a point

The derivative of f\displaystyle f is f′(x)=2x−4\displaystyle {f'(x)}={2x-4}, and the graph of f\displaystyle f passes through the point A(3,5)\displaystyle A(3,5).
In the solution below we find f\displaystyle f from its derivative, and C\displaystyle C from the point:

  • f(x)=∫(2x−4) dx=x2−4x+C\displaystyle {f(x)}={\int(2x-4)\,dx}={x^2-4x+C};
  • substitute A\displaystyle A: 32−4⋅3+C=5\displaystyle {3^2-4\cdot3+C}={5}, that is −3+C=5\displaystyle {-3+C}={5}, so C=8\displaystyle {C}={8};
  • f(x)=x2−4x+8\displaystyle {f(x)}={x^2-4x+8}.
y=x2−4x\displaystyle y=x^{2}-4x
y=x2−4x+4\displaystyle y=x^{2}-4x+4
f(x)=x2−4x+8\displaystyle f(x)=x^{2}-4x+8
A=(3,5)\displaystyle A=(3,5)

The board shows three of the antiderivatives of 2x−4\displaystyle 2x-4. All of them have the same slope at every x\displaystyle x, and only one passes through A\displaystyle A.
