The area between two graphs

The area between two graphs

The upper minus the lower

When the graph of f\displaystyle f lies above the graph of g\displaystyle g between x=a\displaystyle {x}={a} and x=b\displaystyle {x}={b}, the area between them is the integral of the difference:

S\displaystyle S =\displaystyle = ∫ab(f(x)−g(x))dx\displaystyle \int_{a}^{b}\left(f(x)-g(x)\right)dxf(x)≥g(x)\displaystyle f(x)\geq g(x)
  • f(x)−g(x)\displaystyle f(x)-g(x) is the height of the strip between the graphs at each x\displaystyle x, so it is always positive – even when the graphs are below the x\displaystyle x-axis;
  • the area between a graph and the x\displaystyle x-axis is a special case: g(x)=0\displaystyle {g(x)}={0};
  • when the graphs enclose an area, a\displaystyle a and b\displaystyle b are their meeting points: solve f(x)=g(x)\displaystyle {f(x)}={g(x)}.
Example

f(x)=4x−x2\displaystyle {f(x)}={4x-x^2}, g(x)=x\displaystyle {g(x)}={x}.
In the example below we work out the area the graphs enclose:

  • The meeting points: 4x−x2=x\displaystyle {4x-x^2}={x}, that is 3x−x2=0\displaystyle {3x-x^2}={0}, x(3−x)=0\displaystyle {x(3-x)}={0}: x=0\displaystyle {x}={0}, x=3\displaystyle {x}={3};
  • between 0 and 3 the parabola is above the line (for example, at x=1\displaystyle {x}={1}: 3>1\displaystyle 3>1);
  • S=∫03((4x−x2)−x)dx=[3x22−x33]03=272−9=92\displaystyle {S}={\int_0^3\left((4x-x^2)-x\right)dx}={\left[\frac{3x^2}{2}-\frac{x^3}{3}\right]_0^3}={\frac{27}{2}-9}={\frac{9}{2}}.
f(x)=4x−x2\displaystyle f(x)=4x-x^{2}
g(x)=x\displaystyle g(x)=x
A composite area

f(x)=x2\displaystyle {f(x)}={x^2}. The tangent to the graph at the point (2,4)\displaystyle (2,4) is y=4x−4\displaystyle {y}={4x-4} (the slope f′(2)=4\displaystyle {f'(2)}={4}), and it crosses the x\displaystyle x-axis at x=1\displaystyle {x}={1}.
In the solution below we work out the area bounded by the graph, the tangent and the x\displaystyle x-axis – it is made of two parts:

f(x)=x2\displaystyle f(x)=x^{2}
t(x)=4x−4\displaystyle t(x)=4x-4
  • From 0 to 1 – between the graph and the x\displaystyle x-axis: ∫01x2 dx=13\displaystyle {\int_0^1x^2\,dx}={\frac{1}{3}};
  • from 1 to 2 – between the graph and the tangent: ∫12(x2−(4x−4))dx=[x33−2x2+4x]12=83−73=13\displaystyle {\int_1^2\left(x^2-(4x-4)\right)dx}={\left[\frac{x^3}{3}-2x^2+4x\right]_1^2}={\frac{8}{3}-\frac{7}{3}}={\frac{1}{3}};
  • the whole area: 13+13=23\displaystyle {\frac{1}{3}+\frac{1}{3}}={\frac{2}{3}}.

Another way: the area under the graph from 0 to 2, 83\displaystyle \frac{8}{3}, minus the triangle under the tangent, 1⋅42=2\displaystyle {\frac{1\cdot4}{2}}={2}: 23\displaystyle \frac{2}{3} again.

An area with a parameter

k>0\displaystyle k>0, and the area bounded by the line y=2x\displaystyle {y}={2x}, the x\displaystyle x-axis and the line x=k\displaystyle {x}={k} is 9.
In the solution below we write the area in terms of k\displaystyle k, and solve an equation:

  • S=∫0k2x dx=[x2]0k=k2\displaystyle {S}={\int_0^k2x\,dx}={\left[x^2\right]_0^k}={k^2};
  • k2=9\displaystyle {k^2}={9}, so k=3\displaystyle {k}={3} (k=−3\displaystyle {k}={-3} is ruled out: k>0\displaystyle k>0).
