The definite integral and the area to the x-axis

The definite integral and the area to the x-axis

The definite integral

The definite integral of f\displaystyle f from a\displaystyle a to b\displaystyle b is a number: the difference between the values of an antiderivative F\displaystyle F at the two ends.

∫abf(x) dx\displaystyle \int_{a}^{b}f(x)\,dx =\displaystyle = F(b)−F(a)\displaystyle F(b)-F(a)
  • a\displaystyle a – the lower limit, b\displaystyle b – the upper limit;
  • the step in the middle is written [F(x)]ab=F(b)−F(a)\displaystyle {\left[F(x)\right]_{a}^{b}}={F(b)-F(a)};
  • the constant C\displaystyle C does not change the result: it is added to F(b)\displaystyle F(b) and to F(a)\displaystyle F(a), and the subtraction removes it. So C=0\displaystyle {C}={0} is taken.
Example

In the example below we work out ∫03(x2+1) dx\displaystyle \int_0^3(x^2+1)\,dx:

∫03(x2+1) dx=[x33+x]03=(273+3)−(0+0)=12\int_0^3(x^2+1)\,dx=\left[\frac{x^3}{3}+x\right]_0^3=\left(\frac{27}{3}+3\right)-(0+0)=12
An area above the x\displaystyle x-axis

When f(x)≥0\displaystyle f(x)\geq0 between a\displaystyle a and b\displaystyle b, the definite integral equals the area between the graph of f\displaystyle f, the x\displaystyle x-axis and the lines x=a\displaystyle {x}={a} and x=b\displaystyle {x}={b}.
On the board – the area between the graph of f(x)=x2+1\displaystyle {f(x)}={x^2+1}, the x\displaystyle x-axis, x=0\displaystyle {x}={0} and x=3\displaystyle {x}={3}. By the example, the area is 12.

f(x)=x2+1\displaystyle f(x)=x^{2}+1
An area below the x\displaystyle x-axis

When f(x)≤0\displaystyle f(x)\leq0 between a\displaystyle a and b\displaystyle b, the integral is negative: every value of f\displaystyle f is negative. The area is minus the integral.
On the board – the area between the graph of f(x)=x2−4\displaystyle {f(x)}={x^2-4} and the x\displaystyle x-axis, from x=0\displaystyle {x}={0} to x=2\displaystyle {x}={2}:

∫02(x2−4) dx=[x33−4x]02=83−8=−163\int_0^2(x^2-4)\,dx=\left[\frac{x^3}{3}-4x\right]_0^2=\frac{8}{3}-8=-\frac{16}{3}

The area: 163\displaystyle \frac{16}{3}.

f(x)=x2−4\displaystyle f(x)=x^{2}-4
A function that changes sign

When f\displaystyle f changes sign between a\displaystyle a and b\displaystyle b, the interval is split at the zeros of f\displaystyle f, and the area of each part is worked out on its own.
On the board – f(x)=x2−2x\displaystyle {f(x)}={x^2-2x} from x=0\displaystyle {x}={0} to x=3\displaystyle {x}={3}. The zeros: x=0\displaystyle {x}={0}, x=2\displaystyle {x}={2}.

  • From 0 to 2 the graph is below the axis: ∫02(x2−2x) dx=[x33−x2]02=83−4=−43\displaystyle {\int_0^2(x^2-2x)\,dx}={\left[\frac{x^3}{3}-x^2\right]_0^2}={\frac{8}{3}-4}={-\frac{4}{3}}, and the area is 43\displaystyle \frac{4}{3};
  • from 2 to 3 the graph is above the axis: ∫23(x2−2x) dx=0−(−43)=43\displaystyle {\int_2^3(x^2-2x)\,dx}={0-\left(-\frac{4}{3}\right)}={\frac{4}{3}};
  • the whole area: 43+43=83\displaystyle {\frac{4}{3}+\frac{4}{3}}={\frac{8}{3}}.
f(x)=x2−2x\displaystyle f(x)=x^{2}-2x

The integral from 0 to 3 is −43+43=0\displaystyle {-\frac{4}{3}+\frac{4}{3}}={0}: the part below the axis cancels the part above it. So one integral over the whole interval does not give the area.
