The derivative's graph, parity and a parameter

The derivative's graph, parity and a parameter

What the derivative’s graph shows

The value of f′\displaystyle f' at each x\displaystyle x is the slope of f\displaystyle f there. So the behaviour of f\displaystyle f is read from the graph of f′\displaystyle f':

  • the graph of f′\displaystyle f' above the x\displaystyle x-axis (f′>0\displaystyle f'>0) – f\displaystyle f rises;
  • the graph of f′\displaystyle f' below the x\displaystyle x-axis (f′<0\displaystyle f'<0) – f\displaystyle f falls;
  • the graph of f′\displaystyle f' crosses the x\displaystyle x-axis – f\displaystyle f has an extremum point there: a maximum when it crosses from above to below, and a minimum when it crosses from below to above;
  • f′\displaystyle f' has the same domain as f\displaystyle f: near a point outside the domain of f\displaystyle f, f′\displaystyle f' has a vertical asymptote too.
Example

f(x)=x+4x\displaystyle {f(x)}={x+\frac{4}{x}}, and its derivative is g(x)=f′(x)=1−4x2\displaystyle {g(x)}={f'(x)}={1-\frac{4}{x^{2}}} – the graph in the second colour.

f(x)=x+4x\displaystyle f(x)=x+\frac{4}{x}
g(x)=1−4x2\displaystyle g(x)=1-\frac{4}{x^{2}}
x=0\displaystyle x=0
  • g\displaystyle g crosses the x\displaystyle x-axis at x=−2\displaystyle {x}={-2} from above to below – f\displaystyle f has a maximum there, (−2,−4)\displaystyle (-2,-4);
  • g\displaystyle g crosses the x\displaystyle x-axis at x=2\displaystyle {x}={2} from below to above – f\displaystyle f has a minimum there, (2,4)\displaystyle (2,4);
  • between −2\displaystyle -2 and 2\displaystyle 2 the graph of g\displaystyle g is below the x\displaystyle x-axis – f\displaystyle f falls there, on both sides of x=0\displaystyle {x}={0};
  • x=0\displaystyle {x}={0} is in the domain of neither function.
Exercise 1

On the board – the graph of g(x)=f′(x)\displaystyle {g(x)}={f'(x)}, the derivative of a function f\displaystyle f.
The domain of f\displaystyle f: x≠0\displaystyle x\neq0.

g(x)=4−x2x2\displaystyle g(x)=\frac{4-x^{2}}{x^{2}}
a

On which intervals does f\displaystyle f rise, and on which does it fall?

b

At which values of x\displaystyle x does f\displaystyle f have extremum points, and what kind is each one?

Even and odd functions

As for polynomials, parity is checked by substituting −x\displaystyle -x:

f(−x)\displaystyle f(-x) =\displaystyle = f(x)\displaystyle f(x)
f(−x)\displaystyle f(-x) =\displaystyle = −f(x)\displaystyle -f(x)
  • even – f(−x)=f(x)\displaystyle {f(-x)}={f(x)} for every x\displaystyle x in the domain: the graph is symmetric about the y\displaystyle y-axis;
  • odd – f(−x)=−f(x)\displaystyle {f(-x)}={-f(x)} for every x\displaystyle x in the domain: the graph is symmetric about the origin;
  • the domain of an even or odd function is symmetric about 0: if x=1\displaystyle {x}={1} is not in the domain, neither is x=−1\displaystyle {x}={-1}.

On the board: f(x)=3x2−1\displaystyle {f(x)}={\frac{3}{x^{2}-1}} is even, since f(−x)=3(−x)2−1=3x2−1\displaystyle {f(-x)}={\frac{3}{(-x)^{2}-1}}={\frac{3}{x^{2}-1}}; and g(x)=2xx2+1\displaystyle {g(x)}={\frac{2x}{x^{2}+1}} is odd, since g(−x)=−2xx2+1=−g(x)\displaystyle {g(-x)}={\frac{-2x}{x^{2}+1}}={-g(x)}.

f(x)=3x2−1\displaystyle f(x)=\frac{3}{x^{2}-1}
g(x)=2xx2+1\displaystyle g(x)=\frac{2x}{x^{2}+1}
x=1\displaystyle x=1
x=−1\displaystyle x=-1

The graph of f\displaystyle f is the same on both sides of the y\displaystyle y-axis, and the graph of g\displaystyle g comes back onto itself when turned half a turn about (0,0)\displaystyle (0,0).

Exercise 2

Even, odd or neither?
In parts a and b – write f(−x)\displaystyle f(-x), simplify, and end with f(x)\displaystyle f(x) or −f(x)\displaystyle -f(x).

      f(x)=xx−2\displaystyle {f(x)}={\frac{x}{x-2}}. Explain with the domain.

      A parameter

      A parameter is a number written as a letter, for example a\displaystyle a. It is found from one given fact: substitute the fact, and solve an equation in a\displaystyle a.

      Example: f(x)=4x+1ax2−2x\displaystyle {f(x)}={\frac{4x+1}{ax^{2}-2x}}, and f\displaystyle f has the vertical asymptote x=2\displaystyle {x}={2}.
      In the solution below we use the fact that the denominator is 0 at x=2\displaystyle {x}={2}:

      • a⋅22−2⋅2=0\displaystyle {a\cdot2^{2}-2\cdot2}={0}, that is 4a−4=0\displaystyle {4a-4}={0}, and a=1\displaystyle {a}={1};
      • the numerator at x=2\displaystyle {x}={2}: 4⋅2+1=9≠0\displaystyle {4\cdot2+1}={9\neq0}, so x=2\displaystyle {x}={2} really is an asymptote;
      • f(x)=4x+1x2−2x\displaystyle {f(x)}={\frac{4x+1}{x^{2}-2x}} – the graph on the board, with its two vertical asymptotes x=0\displaystyle {x}={0} and x=2\displaystyle {x}={2}.
      f(x)=4x+1x2−2x\displaystyle f(x)=\frac{4x+1}{x^{2}-2x}
      x=0\displaystyle x=0
      x=2\displaystyle x=2
      Exercise 3

      f(x)=x+ax\displaystyle {f(x)}={x+\frac{a}{x}}, and a\displaystyle a is a parameter.

        c
