Investigating a rational function

Investigating a rational function

The steps of an investigation

Investigating a function is a fixed list of questions whose answers together give the shape of the graph:

  1. the domain – every x\displaystyle x except the zeros of the denominator;
  2. asymptotes parallel to the axes – vertical ones at the points outside the domain, and a horizontal one as x→±∞\displaystyle x\to\pm\infty;
  3. the points on the axes – on the x\displaystyle x-axis: f(x)=0\displaystyle {f(x)}={0}; on the y\displaystyle y-axis: f(0)\displaystyle f(0), if 0 is in the domain;
  4. the derivative f′(x)\displaystyle f'(x), and the solutions of f′(x)=0\displaystyle {f'(x)}={0};
  5. the sign table of f′\displaystyle f' – from it, where the function rises and falls, and the kind of each extremum point;
  6. a sketch of the graph.
The sign table of f′\displaystyle f'

f′\displaystyle f' can change its sign only at a point where f′(x)=0\displaystyle {f'(x)}={0}, or at a point where the function is not defined. So:

  • mark both kinds of point on the x\displaystyle x-axis, in order;
  • on each interval between them, substitute one number in f′\displaystyle f' and see its sign;
  • f′>0\displaystyle f'>0 – the function rises; f′<0\displaystyle f'<0 – the function falls;
  • at a point where f′=0\displaystyle {f'}={0} and the sign changes from +\displaystyle + to −\displaystyle - there is a maximum, and from −\displaystyle - to +\displaystyle + – a minimum;
  • at a point outside the domain there is no extremum, even when the sign changes there: the graph has no point there.
Example

f(x)=x2x−1\displaystyle {f(x)}={\frac{x^{2}}{x-1}}.
In the investigation below we go through the steps in order:

  • The domain: x≠1\displaystyle x\neq1.
  • Asymptotes: x=1\displaystyle {x}={1} – vertical. As x→±∞\displaystyle x\to\pm\infty, the numerator grows faster than the denominator, and f\displaystyle f comes close to no number: there is no horizontal asymptote.
  • Points on the axes: f(x)=0\displaystyle {f(x)}={0} only when x=0\displaystyle {x}={0} – the point (0,0)\displaystyle (0,0).
  • f′(x)=x2−2x(x−1)2=x(x−2)(x−1)2\displaystyle {f'(x)}={\frac{x^{2}-2x}{(x-1)^{2}}}={\frac{x(x-2)}{(x-1)^{2}}}, and f′(x)=0\displaystyle {f'(x)}={0} when x=0\displaystyle {x}={0} or x=2\displaystyle {x}={2}.
  • The sign table – the points 0\displaystyle 0, 1\displaystyle 1 (outside the domain) and 2\displaystyle 2:
x\displaystyle xx<0\displaystyle x<00\displaystyle 00<x<1\displaystyle 0<x<11\displaystyle 11<x<2\displaystyle 1<x<22\displaystyle 2x>2\displaystyle x>2
f′(x)\displaystyle f'(x)+\displaystyle +0\displaystyle 0−\displaystyle -none−\displaystyle -0\displaystyle 0+\displaystyle +
f(x)\displaystyle f(x)risesmaximumfallsnonefallsminimumrises
  • f(0)=0\displaystyle {f(0)}={0} and f(2)=41=4\displaystyle {f(2)}={\frac{4}{1}}={4}: a maximum (0,0)\displaystyle (0,0) and a minimum (2,4)\displaystyle (2,4).
f(x)=x2x−1\displaystyle f(x)=\frac{x^{2}}{x-1}
x=1\displaystyle x=1
(0,0)\displaystyle (0,0)
(2,4)\displaystyle (2,4)

The minimum (2,4)\displaystyle (2,4) is higher than the maximum (0,0)\displaystyle (0,0): they are on two branches of the graph, on the two sides of the asymptote x=1\displaystyle {x}={1}.
