The derivative of a root function

The derivative of a root function

A reminder from grade 10

The derivative of the square root of a function u(x)\displaystyle u(x) is the derivative of u\displaystyle u divided by twice the root:

(u)′\displaystyle \left(\sqrt{u}\right)' =\displaystyle = u′2u\displaystyle \frac{u'}{2\sqrt{u}}
  • (x2+5)′=2x2x2+5=xx2+5\displaystyle {\left(\sqrt{x^2+5}\right)'}={\frac{2x}{2\sqrt{x^2+5}}}={\frac{x}{\sqrt{x^2+5}}}.
  • A function times a root is differentiated by the product rule: (u⋅v)′=u′⋅v+u⋅v′\displaystyle {(u\cdot v)'}={u'\cdot v+u\cdot v'}.

In this lesson f\displaystyle f and g\displaystyle g are polynomials of degree at most 2, and the functions are y=f(x)g(x)\displaystyle {y}={\sqrt{\frac{f(x)}{g(x)}}} and y=g(x)⋅f(x)\displaystyle {y}={g(x)\cdot\sqrt{f(x)}}.

The domain

A square root is defined only for a number that is not negative, and a fraction only when its denominator is not 0:

  • y=g(x)⋅f(x)\displaystyle {y}={g(x)\cdot\sqrt{f(x)}} is defined where f(x)≥0\displaystyle f(x)\geq0.
  • y=f(x)g(x)\displaystyle {y}={\sqrt{\frac{f(x)}{g(x)}}} is defined where f(x)g(x)≥0\displaystyle \frac{f(x)}{g(x)}\geq0 – an inequality of a fraction, solved as in the lesson on positive and negative values.

For example, y=x−1x+2\displaystyle {y}={\sqrt{\frac{x-1}{x+2}}}: the fraction is positive or 0 when x<−2\displaystyle x<-2 or x≥1\displaystyle x\geq1. At x=1\displaystyle {x}={1} the numerator is 0, and the root is 0\displaystyle 0; at x=−2\displaystyle {x}={-2} the denominator is 0, so −2\displaystyle -2 is not in the domain.

The root of a fraction

y=x−1x+2\displaystyle {y}={\sqrt{\frac{x-1}{x+2}}}.
In the example below we differentiate by the root rule with u=x−1x+2\displaystyle {u}={\frac{x-1}{x+2}}, and find u′\displaystyle u' by the quotient rule:

  • u′=1⋅(x+2)−(x−1)⋅1(x+2)2=3(x+2)2\displaystyle {u'}={\frac{1\cdot(x+2)-(x-1)\cdot1}{(x+2)^2}}={\frac{3}{(x+2)^2}}.
  • y′=u′2u=32(x+2)2x−1x+2\displaystyle {y'}={\frac{u'}{2\sqrt{u}}}={\frac{3}{2(x+2)^2\sqrt{\frac{x-1}{x+2}}}}.

The derivative is defined on the domain except at x=1\displaystyle {x}={1}: there the root in the denominator is 0.

A polynomial times a root

y=x4−x\displaystyle {y}={x\sqrt{4-x}}, and its domain is x≤4\displaystyle x\leq4.
In the example below we differentiate by the product rule, and write the derivative as one fraction:

y′=1⋅4−x+x⋅−124−x=2(4−x)−x24−x=8−3x24−xy'=1\cdot\sqrt{4-x}+x\cdot\frac{-1}{2\sqrt{4-x}}=\frac{2(4-x)-x}{2\sqrt{4-x}}=\frac{8-3x}{2\sqrt{4-x}}

To add them, 4−x\displaystyle \sqrt{4-x} is multiplied above and below by 24−x\displaystyle 2\sqrt{4-x}: 4−x⋅4−x=4−x\displaystyle {\sqrt{4-x}\cdot\sqrt{4-x}}={4-x}.

A tangent

In the example below we find the equation of the tangent to the graph of y=x4−x\displaystyle {y}={x\sqrt{4-x}} at the point where x=3\displaystyle {x}={3}:

  • The point: y(3)=31=3\displaystyle {y(3)}={3\sqrt{1}}={3}, that is (3,3)\displaystyle (3,3).
  • The slope: m=y′(3)=8−921=−12\displaystyle {m}={y'(3)}={\frac{8-9}{2\sqrt{1}}}={-\frac{1}{2}}.
  • The tangent: y−3=−12(x−3)\displaystyle {y-3}={-\frac{1}{2}(x-3)}, that is y=−12x+92\displaystyle {y}={-\frac{1}{2}x+\frac{9}{2}}.
f(x)=x4−x\displaystyle f(x)=x\sqrt{4-x}
y=−12x+92\displaystyle y=-\frac{1}{2}x+\frac{9}{2}
(3,3)\displaystyle (3,3)
