The tangent to a rational function's graph

The tangent to a rational function's graph

The equation of the tangent

The tangent to the graph at the point (x1,y1)\displaystyle (x_1,y_1) is the line through the point whose slope is the derivative there – as for polynomials in grade 10:

m\displaystyle m =\displaystyle = f′(x1)\displaystyle f'(x_1)
y−y1\displaystyle y-y_1 =\displaystyle = m(x−x1)\displaystyle m(x-x_1)
  • y1=f(x1)\displaystyle {y_1}={f(x_1)} – substitute in f\displaystyle f, not in f′\displaystyle f';
  • m=f′(x1)\displaystyle {m}={f'(x_1)} – substitute in f′\displaystyle f';
  • substitute in the equation of the line, and rewrite it as y=mx+b\displaystyle {y}={mx+b}.
Example

f(x)=x+1x−2\displaystyle {f(x)}={\frac{x+1}{x-2}}.
Find the equation of the tangent to the graph at the point where x=3\displaystyle {x}={3}.

In the solution below we work out y1\displaystyle y_1 and the slope, and substitute in the equation of the line:

  • y1=f(3)=41=4\displaystyle {y_1}={f(3)}={\frac{4}{1}}={4} – the point (3,4)\displaystyle (3,4);
  • f′(x)=−3(x−2)2\displaystyle {f'(x)}={\frac{-3}{(x-2)^{2}}} (from the previous lesson), so m=f′(3)=−31=−3\displaystyle {m}={f'(3)}={\frac{-3}{1}}={-3};
  • y−4=−3(x−3)\displaystyle {y-4}={-3(x-3)}, that is y=−3x+13\displaystyle {y}={-3x+13}.
f(x)=x+1x−2\displaystyle f(x)=\frac{x+1}{x-2}
y=−3x+13\displaystyle y=-3x+13
x=2\displaystyle x=2
A=(3,4)\displaystyle A=(3,4)
A tangent with a given slope

When the slope of the tangent is given and the point is not, look for the x\displaystyle x where the derivative equals the slope – solve the equation f′(x)=m\displaystyle {f'(x)}={m}:

  • a tangent parallel to the x\displaystyle x-axis: the slope is 0, f′(x)=0\displaystyle {f'(x)}={0};
  • a tangent parallel to the line y=mx+b\displaystyle {y}={mx+b}: parallel lines have the same slope, f′(x)=m\displaystyle {f'(x)}={m}.

Example: f(x)=x+4x\displaystyle {f(x)}={x+\frac{4}{x}}, and f′(x)=1−4x2\displaystyle {f'(x)}={1-\frac{4}{x^{2}}}.
1−4x2=0\displaystyle {1-\frac{4}{x^{2}}}={0} gives x2=4\displaystyle {x^{2}}={4}, that is x=2\displaystyle {x}={2} or x=−2\displaystyle {x}={-2}.
f(2)=4\displaystyle {f(2)}={4} and f(−2)=−4\displaystyle {f(-2)}={-4}, so the tangents parallel to the x\displaystyle x-axis are y=4\displaystyle {y}={4} and y=−4\displaystyle {y}={-4} (the dashed ones).

f(x)=x+4x\displaystyle f(x)=x+\frac{4}{x}
y=4\displaystyle y=4
y=−4\displaystyle y=-4
x=0\displaystyle x=0
