Transformations of a graph

Transformations of a graph

A reminder from grade 10

In grade 10 you shifted and stretched graphs of polynomials, for example of y=x2\displaystyle {y}={x^2}:

  • y=(x−3)2\displaystyle {y}={(x-3)^2} – the graph moves 3 units to the right;
  • y=x2+2\displaystyle {y}={x^2+2} – the graph moves 2 units up;
  • y=−x2\displaystyle {y}={-x^2} – the graph is reflected in the x\displaystyle x-axis;
  • y=3x2\displaystyle {y}={3x^2} – the graph is stretched by 3 along the y\displaystyle y-axis.

The same operations work on any function, and on g(x)=1f(x)\displaystyle {g(x)}={\frac{1}{f(x)}} too.

The transformations of 1f(x)\displaystyle \frac{1}{f(x)}

g(x)=1f(x)\displaystyle {g(x)}={\frac{1}{f(x)}}, and each operation gives a new function:

  • A horizontal shift: y=1f(x−p)\displaystyle {y}={\frac{1}{f(x-p)}} – the graph moves p\displaystyle p units to the right (p>0\displaystyle p>0) or to the left (p<0\displaystyle p<0).
  • A vertical shift: y=1f(x)+k\displaystyle {y}={\frac{1}{f(x)}+k} – the graph moves k\displaystyle k units up (k>0\displaystyle k>0) or down (k<0\displaystyle k<0).
  • A reflection in the x\displaystyle x-axis: y=−1f(x)\displaystyle {y}={-\frac{1}{f(x)}} – every value changes its sign.
  • A reflection in the y\displaystyle y-axis: y=1f(−x)\displaystyle {y}={\frac{1}{f(-x)}} – what was at x=3\displaystyle {x}={3} is now at x=−3\displaystyle {x}={-3}.
  • A stretch or a squeeze: y=af(x)\displaystyle {y}={\frac{a}{f(x)}} – every value is multiplied by a\displaystyle a: a stretch when a>1\displaystyle a>1, a squeeze when 0<a<1\displaystyle 0<a<1.

The operations can be combined:

y=af(x−p)+k\displaystyle y=\frac{a}{f(x-p)}+k
The asymptotes move with the graph

An asymptote is part of the graph’s picture, so it goes through the same operation:

  • A shift to the right by p\displaystyle p: a vertical asymptote x=c\displaystyle {x}={c} moves to x=c+p\displaystyle {x}={c+p}.
  • A shift up by k\displaystyle k: the horizontal asymptote y=0\displaystyle {y}={0} moves to y=k\displaystyle {y}={k}.
  • A reflection in the y\displaystyle y-axis: x=c\displaystyle {x}={c} moves to x=−c\displaystyle {x}={-c}.
  • A reflection in the x\displaystyle x-axis, a stretch and a squeeze: the asymptotes stay – a0\displaystyle \frac{a}{0} is still undefined, and a\displaystyle a times a number close to 0 is still close to 0.
Example

f(x)=1x\displaystyle {f(x)}={\frac{1}{x}} has two asymptotes: x=0\displaystyle {x}={0} and y=0\displaystyle {y}={0}.
In the example below we move the graph 2 units to the right and 1 unit up:

  • g(x)=1x−2+1\displaystyle {g(x)}={\frac{1}{x-2}+1};
  • the vertical asymptote moves from x=0\displaystyle {x}={0} to x=2\displaystyle {x}={2};
  • the horizontal asymptote moves from y=0\displaystyle {y}={0} to y=1\displaystyle {y}={1};
  • the domain of g\displaystyle g: x≠2\displaystyle x\neq2.
f(x)=1x\displaystyle f(x)=\frac{1}{x}
g(x)=1x−2+1\displaystyle g(x)=\frac{1}{x-2}+1
x=2\displaystyle x=2
y=1\displaystyle y=1

Every point of f\displaystyle f’s graph moves in the same way: (1,1)\displaystyle (1,1) moves to (3,2)\displaystyle (3,2), and (−1,−1)\displaystyle (-1,-1) moves to (1,0)\displaystyle (1,0) – the point where g\displaystyle g crosses the x\displaystyle x-axis.

Absolute value

y=∣1f(x)∣\displaystyle {y}={\left|\frac{1}{f(x)}\right|}: where the value is positive it stays, and where it is negative it changes its sign.
The part of the graph below the x\displaystyle x-axis is reflected above it, and the part above it does not change. The asymptotes stay.
On the board: g(x)=1x−1\displaystyle {g(x)}={\frac{1}{x-1}} (dashed) and h(x)=∣1x−1∣\displaystyle {h(x)}={\left|\frac{1}{x-1}\right|}.

g(x)=1x−1\displaystyle g(x)=\frac{1}{x-1}
h(x)=∣1x−1∣\displaystyle h(x)=\left|\frac{1}{x-1}\right|
Exercise 1

On the board – the graph of f(x)=1x\displaystyle {f(x)}={\frac{1}{x}}.
It is moved 3 units to the right and 2 units down.
Write the new function on the board, and the equations of its two asymptotes.

f(x)=1x\displaystyle f(x)=\frac{1}{x}

Exercise 2

On the board – the graph of g(x)=1x2+1\displaystyle {g(x)}={\frac{1}{x^2+1}}, and beside it the graph of h(x)\displaystyle h(x).
h\displaystyle h was made from g\displaystyle g by a reflection in the x\displaystyle x-axis and a stretch by 2.
Write h(x)\displaystyle h(x) on the board.

g(x)=1x2+1\displaystyle g(x)=\frac{1}{x^{2}+1}
h(x)= ?\displaystyle h(x)=\,?
