Exponential and logarithmic functions, grade 12 (4 units)

Two new families of functions: exponential functions and logarithmic functions.Subjects

They describe many processes in nature and in the economy – savings in a bank, a virus spreading, a radioactive substance decaying. The course builds on the differential and integral calculus of grades 10 and 11 (4 units): the derivative of a polynomial, of a root and of a rational function, the tangent, investigating a function, the integral and the area. The topics, in order:

  • powers: all the laws of powers, a rational exponent included;
  • the exponential function ax\displaystyle a^x: its properties, transformations, exponential equations and inequalities;
  • the logarithm: its definition, the laws of logarithms, the logarithmic function, logarithmic equations and inequalities;
  • growth and decay: f(t)=f(0)⋅qt\displaystyle {f(t)}={f(0)\cdot q^t}, a uniform unit of time and the half-life;
  • the number e\displaystyle e: the derivatives of ex\displaystyle e^x and of ln⁡x\displaystyle \ln x, investigating functions, the graph of a function and the graph of its derivative;
  • integrals that lead to ex\displaystyle e^x and to ln⁡x\displaystyle \ln x, and areas.

There are two kinds of lessons:

  • learning lessons – an explanation, worked examples and a few questions to try;
  • practice lessons – questions only.

How the page works: Using a page.

  1. The laws of powersLearningA product, a quotient and a power of powers, the exponents 0 and negative, a rational exponent and a root written as a power; numbers and expressions with letters.
  2. The exponential functionLearningThe function $f(x)=a^x$: why $a>0$ and $a eq1$, a table and a graph, its properties when $a>1$ and when $0<a<1$, several bases on one system of axes, and the base found from a point.
  3. Transformations of the exponential functionLearningFrom $3^x$ to $-2\cdot3^{x-1}+4$ step by step: a horizontal and a vertical shift, reflections in the axes, a vertical stretch and the absolute value – and what each does to the asymptote, the point on the $y$-axis and increase or decrease.
  4. Exponential equations and inequalitiesLearningThe same base on both sides, a common factor, the substitution $t=a^x$ with $t>0$, and inequalities $a^{f(x)}\geq a^{g(x)}$ – the sign kept when $a>1$ and turned when $0<a<1$.
  5. The logarithmLearningThe logarithm as the inverse of a power: $\log_a x=b$ means $a^b=x$; values of logarithms, the logarithm to the base 10, why 0 and negative numbers have no logarithm, and equations from the definition.
  6. The laws of logarithmsLearningThe logarithm of a product, of a quotient and of a power, and why they hold; calculating with the laws, writing an expression as one logarithm, and an exponential equation solved by the logarithm of both sides.
  7. The logarithmic functionLearning$f(x)=\log_a x$: the domain, the point on the x-axis, the vertical asymptote, increasing and decreasing, positive and negative; $\log_2 x$ against $\log_{\frac{1}{2}}x$; the mirror of $a^x$; transformations, and the domain of $\log_a f(x)$.
  8. Logarithmic equations and inequalitiesLearningThe domain first; an equation by the definition, an equation of two logarithms to the same base, an equation with $t=\log x$; the inequality $\log_a f(x)>\log_a g(x)$ – when $a>1$ and when $0<a<1$.
  9. Growth and decayLearningA process in which an amount is multiplied by the same number in every unit of time; $f(t)=f(0)\cdot q^t$ and the growth or decay factor $q$; the amount after a given time; a uniform unit of time; finding $q$ from two amounts; the graph.
  10. Half-life and finding a timeLearningFinding the time in $q^t=c$ with a logarithm; the half-life and the doubling time; comparing two processes; a virus spreading and dying out.
  11. Practice: powers, exponential and logarithmic functions, growth and decayPracticeThe laws of powers, values of logarithms, exponential and logarithmic equations and inequalities, the graphs of an exponential and a logarithmic function, a transformation, savings in a bank and a medicine breaking down in the body.
  12. The number e and derivativesLearningA reminder of the rules of differentiation; the number $e$ and the natural logarithm $\ln x$; the derivatives of $e^x$, of $\ln x$, of $e^{f(x)}$ and of $\ln f(x)$; products and quotients with polynomials; the equation of a tangent.
  13. Investigating exponential functionsLearningThe steps of an investigation; $e^{f(x)}>0$, so $e^{f(x)}\cdot g(x)=0$ only where $g(x)=0$; investigating $xe^{2x}$ and the graph of its derivative; the horizontal asymptote of $e^x$ and of its transformations; finding a parameter.
  14. Investigating logarithmic functionsLearningThe domain of $\ln f(x)$; a vertical asymptote at the edge of the domain and where a denominator is 0; investigating $(\ln x)^2-2\ln x$; an even function; a parameter from the slope of a tangent.
  15. The graph of a function and the graph of its derivativeLearningThe sign of $f'$ decides where $f$ increases and decreases; a zero of $f'$ where its sign changes is an extremum point; reading $f$ from the graph of its derivative, a parameter from the graph of the derivative, and telling the graphs apart.
  16. Practice: derivatives and investigationPracticeThe derivatives of $e^{f(x)}$, of $\ln f(x)$, of a product and of a quotient; a tangent; investigating functions with $e^x$ and with $\ln x$ – the domain, extremum points, increase and decrease, asymptotes, even and odd; a parameter; the graph of a function and the graph of its derivative.
  17. Integrals of $e^x$ and of $\frac{1}{x}$LearningA reminder: the antiderivative and the integral; the integrals of $e^x$, of $e^{mx+b}$, of $\frac{1}{x}$ and of $\frac{1}{mx+b}$; an antiderivative through a point; the definite integral; the integral of a derivative; a parameter in a limit of the integral.
  18. The area between a graph and the x-axis, and between two graphsLearningAn area above the $x$-axis and below it, a function that changes sign, the area between two graphs and a parameter found from a given area – with $e^x$ and with $\frac{1}{x}$.
  19. Practice: integrals and areasPracticeAntiderivatives of $e^{mx+b}$ and of $\frac{1}{mx+b}$, an antiderivative through a point, the definite integral, the integral of a derivative, the area between a graph and the axis and between two graphs, and a parameter from an area.
  20. Review: exponential and logarithmic functionsPracticeQuestions from the whole course: an exponential and a logarithmic equation and inequality, the falling value of a car, investigating $(x+a)e^x$ with a parameter and an area, investigating $\frac{\ln x}{x}$ and an area, and the graph of a function against the graph of its derivative.
