The exponential function

The exponential function

The exponential function

In an exponential function the variable is in the exponent, and the base is a fixed number:

f(x)=ax\displaystyle f(x)=a^{x}a>0, a≠1\displaystyle a>0,\ a\neq1
  • A negative base has no value at some x\displaystyle x: (−4)12=−4\displaystyle {(-4)^{\frac{1}{2}}}={\sqrt{-4}} is not a number.
  • The base 1 gives 1x=1\displaystyle {1^x}={1} for every x\displaystyle x – a straight line, not a new kind of function.
A table of 2x\displaystyle 2^x and of (12)x\displaystyle \left(\frac{1}{2}\right)^x

Each step of 1 in x\displaystyle x multiplies 2x\displaystyle 2^x by 2, and (12)x\displaystyle \left(\frac{1}{2}\right)^x by 12\displaystyle \frac{1}{2}:

x\displaystyle x−2\displaystyle -2−1\displaystyle -10\displaystyle 01\displaystyle 12\displaystyle 23\displaystyle 3
2x\displaystyle 2^x14\displaystyle \frac{1}{4}12\displaystyle \frac{1}{2}1\displaystyle 12\displaystyle 24\displaystyle 48\displaystyle 8
(12)x\displaystyle \left(\frac{1}{2}\right)^x4\displaystyle 42\displaystyle 21\displaystyle 112\displaystyle \frac{1}{2}14\displaystyle \frac{1}{4}18\displaystyle \frac{1}{8}
f(x)=2x\displaystyle f(x)=2^{x}
g(x)=(12)x\displaystyle g(x)=\left(\frac{1}{2}\right)^{x}
y=0\displaystyle y=0
The properties of ax\displaystyle a^x

The graphs of 2x\displaystyle 2^x and of (12)x\displaystyle \left(\frac{1}{2}\right)^x show the properties of every exponential function:

  • The domain: every x\displaystyle x.
  • The point on the y\displaystyle y-axis: (0,1)\displaystyle (0,1), since a0=1\displaystyle {a^0}={1}. There is no point on the x\displaystyle x-axis.
  • Positive for every x\displaystyle x: a positive base to any power is positive.
  • The horizontal asymptote y=0\displaystyle {y}={0}: when a>1\displaystyle a>1 the graph comes close to it on the left, when 0<a<1\displaystyle 0<a<1 on the right.
  • When a>1\displaystyle a>1 the function is increasing; when 0<a<1\displaystyle 0<a<1 it is decreasing.
Several bases

All the graphs of ax\displaystyle a^x pass through (0,1)\displaystyle (0,1); the base decides how steep they are.

  • For x>0\displaystyle x>0 the graph of the larger base is above: 10x>3x>2x\displaystyle 10^x>3^x>2^x.
  • For x<0\displaystyle x<0 it is the other way round: 10−1=110\displaystyle {10^{-1}}={\frac{1}{10}} is less than 2−1=12\displaystyle {2^{-1}}={\frac{1}{2}}.
f(x)=2x\displaystyle f(x)=2^{x}
g(x)=3x\displaystyle g(x)=3^{x}
h(x)=10x\displaystyle h(x)=10^{x}
(1a)x\displaystyle \left(\frac{1}{a}\right)^x, the mirror of ax\displaystyle a^x

(12)x=12x=2−x\displaystyle {\left(\frac{1}{2}\right)^x}={\frac{1}{2^x}}={2^{-x}}: at x\displaystyle x it has the value 2x\displaystyle 2^x has at −x\displaystyle -x.

  • So the graph of (12)x\displaystyle \left(\frac{1}{2}\right)^x is the graph of 2x\displaystyle 2^x reflected in the y\displaystyle y-axis.
  • The same holds for every base: (1a)x=a−x\displaystyle {\left(\frac{1}{a}\right)^x}={a^{-x}}.
