Transformations of the exponential function

Transformations of the exponential function

From 3x\displaystyle 3^x to −2⋅3x−1+4\displaystyle -2\cdot3^{x-1}+4

The example below builds q(x)=−2⋅3x−1+4\displaystyle {q(x)}={-2\cdot3^{x-1}+4} from f(x)=3x\displaystyle {f(x)}={3^x} in three steps, each a transformation of the graph before it:

  • g(x)=3x−1=f(x−1)\displaystyle {g(x)}={3^{x-1}}={f(x-1)}: the graph of f\displaystyle f shifted 1 to the right. It passes through (1,1)\displaystyle (1,1); the asymptote stays y=0\displaystyle {y}={0}.
  • h(x)=−2⋅3x−1=−2g(x)\displaystyle {h(x)}={-2\cdot3^{x-1}}={-2g(x)}: stretched vertically by 2 and reflected in the x\displaystyle x-axis. Now it is negative and decreasing; the asymptote is still y=0\displaystyle {y}={0}.
  • q(x)=−2⋅3x−1+4=h(x)+4\displaystyle {q(x)}={-2\cdot3^{x-1}+4}={h(x)+4}: shifted 4 up. The asymptote moves with it, to y=4\displaystyle {y}={4}.
f(x)=3x\displaystyle f(x)=3^{x}
g(x)=3x−1\displaystyle g(x)=3^{x-1}
h(x)=−2⋅3x−1\displaystyle h(x)=-2\cdot3^{x-1}
q(x)=−2⋅3x−1+4\displaystyle q(x)=-2\cdot3^{x-1}+4
y=4\displaystyle y=4
The properties of q\displaystyle q

The properties of q(x)=−2⋅3x−1+4\displaystyle {q(x)}={-2\cdot3^{x-1}+4} follow from the steps:

  • The domain: every x\displaystyle x.
  • The horizontal asymptote: y=4\displaystyle {y}={4}, on the left.
  • The point on the y\displaystyle y-axis: q(0)=−2⋅3−1+4=−23+4=313\displaystyle {q(0)}={-2\cdot3^{-1}+4}={-\frac{2}{3}+4}={3\frac{1}{3}}.
  • Decreasing for every x\displaystyle x, and q(x)<4\displaystyle q(x)<4 for every x\displaystyle x.
  • It meets the x\displaystyle x-axis where 3x−1=2\displaystyle {3^{x-1}}={2} – an equation solved with a logarithm, in a later lesson.
The transformations

Each change in the formula moves the graph of f\displaystyle f in its own way:

The formulaThe graph of f\displaystyle fThe asymptote y=0\displaystyle {y}={0} becomes
f(x)+k\displaystyle f(x)+kshifted k\displaystyle k up (k<0\displaystyle k<0: down)y=k\displaystyle {y}={k}
f(x−h)\displaystyle f(x-h)shifted h\displaystyle h to the right (h<0\displaystyle h<0: to the left)y=0\displaystyle {y}={0}
−f(x)\displaystyle -f(x)reflected in the x\displaystyle x-axisy=0\displaystyle {y}={0}
f(−x)\displaystyle f(-x)reflected in the y\displaystyle y-axisy=0\displaystyle {y}={0}
k⋅f(x)\displaystyle k\cdot f(x), k>0\displaystyle k>0stretched vertically (k<1\displaystyle k<1: shrunk)y=0\displaystyle {y}={0}
∣f(x)∣\displaystyle \lvert f(x)\rvertits part below the x\displaystyle x-axis reflected upy=0\displaystyle {y}={0}
  • Only a vertical shift moves a horizontal asymptote.
  • f(−x)\displaystyle f(-x) for f(x)=3x\displaystyle {f(x)}={3^x} is 3−x=(13)x\displaystyle {3^{-x}}={\left(\frac{1}{3}\right)^x}: increasing becomes decreasing.
The absolute value ∣2x−4∣\displaystyle \lvert2^x-4\rvert

The graph of 2x−4\displaystyle 2^x-4 is below the x\displaystyle x-axis for x<2\displaystyle x<2; the absolute value reflects that part up.

  • The point on the x\displaystyle x-axis: 2x=4\displaystyle {2^x}={4}, x=2\displaystyle {x}={2}. There the graph has a sharp corner, a minimum point (2,0)\displaystyle (2,0).
  • On the left the graph comes close to y=4\displaystyle {y}={4}, the reflection of the asymptote y=−4\displaystyle {y}={-4}.
  • Decreasing for x<2\displaystyle x<2, increasing for x>2\displaystyle x>2.
f(x)=2x−4\displaystyle f(x)=2^{x}-4
g(x)=∣2x−4∣\displaystyle g(x)=|2^{x}-4|
y=4\displaystyle y=4
