Investigating exponential functions

The steps of an investigation

A function with ex\displaystyle e^x is investigated in the same steps as a polynomial or a rational function:

  • the domain;
  • the points where the graph meets the axes;
  • the derivative, the extremum points and the intervals of increase and decrease;
  • the intervals where the function is positive and negative;
  • asymptotes;
  • a sketch of the graph.
ef(x)\displaystyle e^{f(x)} is always positive

ef(x)>0\displaystyle e^{f(x)}>0 for every x\displaystyle x, so in a function of the form ef(x)⋅g(x)\displaystyle e^{f(x)}\cdot g(x):

  • ef(x)⋅g(x)=0\displaystyle {e^{f(x)}\cdot g(x)}={0} only where g(x)=0\displaystyle {g(x)}={0};
  • the sign of ef(x)⋅g(x)\displaystyle e^{f(x)}\cdot g(x) is the sign of g(x)\displaystyle g(x).

So it pays to take ef(x)\displaystyle e^{f(x)} out as a common factor of the derivative: e2x(1+2x)=0\displaystyle {e^{2x}(1+2x)}={0} only where 1+2x=0\displaystyle {1+2x}={0}.

Investigating xe2x\displaystyle xe^{2x}

The example below investigates the function f(x)=xe2x\displaystyle {f(x)}={xe^{2x}}:

  • The domain: every x\displaystyle x.
  • The axes: xe2x=0\displaystyle {xe^{2x}}={0} only where x=0\displaystyle {x}={0}. The graph meets both axes at the origin, (0,0)\displaystyle (0,0).
  • The derivative: f′(x)=e2x+2xe2x=e2x(1+2x)\displaystyle {f'(x)}={e^{2x}+2xe^{2x}}={e^{2x}(1+2x)}, and f′(x)=0\displaystyle {f'(x)}={0} where x=−12\displaystyle {x}={-\frac{1}{2}}.
  • Where x<−12\displaystyle x<-\frac{1}{2}, f′(x)<0\displaystyle f'(x)<0 – the function decreases; where x>−12\displaystyle x>-\frac{1}{2}, f′(x)>0\displaystyle f'(x)>0 – it increases.
  • A minimum point: f(−12)=−12e−1=−12e\displaystyle {f\left(-\frac{1}{2}\right)}={-\frac{1}{2}e^{-1}}={-\frac{1}{2e}}, that is (−12,−12e)≈(−0.5,−0.18)\displaystyle \left(-\frac{1}{2},-\frac{1}{2e}\right)\approx(-0.5,-0.18). It is also the absolute minimum.
  • Positive and negative: the sign of f\displaystyle f is the sign of x\displaystyle x – positive where x>0\displaystyle x>0, negative where x<0\displaystyle x<0.
f(x)=xe2x\displaystyle f(x)=xe^{2x}
M=(−0.5,−0.184)\displaystyle M=(-0.5,-0.184)
  • Where x\displaystyle x is negative and far from 0, xe2x\displaystyle xe^{2x} is close to 0: the line y=0\displaystyle {y}={0} is a horizontal asymptote on the left.
The graph of the derivative f′(x)\displaystyle f'(x)

On the same axes, the graph of f\displaystyle f (dashed) and the graph of the derivative g(x)=f′(x)=e2x(1+2x)\displaystyle {g(x)}={f'(x)}={e^{2x}(1+2x)}:

f(x)=xe2x\displaystyle f(x)=xe^{2x}
g(x)=e2x(1+2x)\displaystyle g(x)=e^{2x}(1+2x)
  • The graph of f′\displaystyle f' meets the x-axis at x=−12\displaystyle {x}={-\frac{1}{2}}, right below the minimum point of f\displaystyle f.
  • Left of −12\displaystyle -\frac{1}{2} the graph of f′\displaystyle f' is below the x-axis, and f\displaystyle f decreases; right of it the graph is above the axis, and f\displaystyle f increases.
A horizontal asymptote

ex\displaystyle e^x has the horizontal asymptote y=0\displaystyle {y}={0}: where x\displaystyle x is negative and far from 0, ex\displaystyle e^x is close to 0. A transformation of ex\displaystyle e^x moves the asymptote:

  • f(x)=ex+2\displaystyle {f(x)}={e^x+2}: a vertical shift by 2, and the asymptote is y=2\displaystyle {y}={2} (where x\displaystyle x is negative and far from 0).
  • g(x)=3−e−x\displaystyle {g(x)}={3-e^{-x}}: e−x\displaystyle e^{-x} is close to 0 where x\displaystyle x is positive and large, so the asymptote is y=3\displaystyle {y}={3} – on the right.
  • In the function a⋅emx+b+k\displaystyle a\cdot e^{mx+b}+k the horizontal asymptote is y=k\displaystyle {y}={k}.
f(x)=ex+2\displaystyle f(x)=e^{x}+2
y=2\displaystyle y=2
g(x)=3−e−x\displaystyle g(x)=3-e^{-x}
y=3\displaystyle y=3
Finding a parameter

The graph of the function f(x)=(x2+ax+1)e−x\displaystyle {f(x)}={(x^2+ax+1)e^{-x}} meets the x-axis at the point where x=−1\displaystyle {x}={-1}. The example below finds a\displaystyle a and investigates the function:

  • f(−1)=0\displaystyle {f(-1)}={0}: (1−a+1)e1=0\displaystyle {(1-a+1)e^{1}}={0}, and e≠0\displaystyle e\neq0, so 2−a=0\displaystyle {2-a}={0} and a=2\displaystyle {a}={2}.
  • f(x)=(x2+2x+1)e−x=(x+1)2e−x\displaystyle {f(x)}={(x^2+2x+1)e^{-x}}={(x+1)^2e^{-x}}.
  • f′(x)=2(x+1)e−x−(x+1)2e−x=e−x(x+1)(1−x)\displaystyle {f'(x)}={2(x+1)e^{-x}-(x+1)^2e^{-x}}={e^{-x}(x+1)(1-x)}, and f′(x)=0\displaystyle {f'(x)}={0} where x=−1\displaystyle {x}={-1} or x=1\displaystyle {x}={1}.
  • f\displaystyle f decreases where x<−1\displaystyle x<-1 and where x>1\displaystyle x>1, and increases where −1<x<1\displaystyle -1<x<1.
  • A minimum (−1,0)\displaystyle (-1,0), a maximum (1,4e)≈(1,1.47)\displaystyle \left(1,\frac{4}{e}\right)\approx(1,1.47).
  • f(x)≥0\displaystyle f(x)\geq0 for every x\displaystyle x, and the graph meets the y-axis at (0,1)\displaystyle (0,1).
  • The horizontal asymptote is y=0\displaystyle {y}={0}, where x\displaystyle x is positive and large.
f(x)=(x+1)2e−x\displaystyle f(x)=(x+1)^{2}e^{-x}
