The laws of logarithms

The laws of logarithms

The logarithm of a product

A sum of logarithms to the same base is the logarithm of the product:

log⁡ax+log⁡ay\displaystyle \log_{a}x+\log_{a}y =\displaystyle = log⁡a(x⋅y)\displaystyle \log_{a}(x\cdot y)x>0, y>0\displaystyle x>0,\ y>0
  • The law comes from the law of powers am⋅an=am+n\displaystyle {a^m\cdot a^n}={a^{m+n}}: if log⁡ax=m\displaystyle {\log_a x}={m} and log⁡ay=n\displaystyle {\log_a y}={n}, then x=am\displaystyle {x}={a^m}, y=an\displaystyle {y}={a^n}, and xy=am+n\displaystyle {xy}={a^{m+n}}. So log⁡a(xy)=m+n\displaystyle {\log_a(xy)}={m+n}.
  • log⁡64+log⁡69=log⁡636=2\displaystyle {\log_6 4+\log_6 9}={\log_6 36}={2}: neither logarithm is a whole number, and their sum is 2.
The logarithm of a quotient

A difference of logarithms to the same base is the logarithm of the quotient:

log⁡ax−log⁡ay\displaystyle \log_{a}x-\log_{a}y =\displaystyle = log⁡a(xy)\displaystyle \log_{a}\left(\frac{x}{y}\right)x>0, y>0\displaystyle x>0,\ y>0
  • The law comes from aman=am−n\displaystyle {\frac{a^m}{a^n}}={a^{m-n}}.
  • log⁡224−log⁡23=log⁡28=3\displaystyle {\log_2 24-\log_2 3}={\log_2 8}={3}.
The logarithm of a power

The number’s exponent comes out in front of the logarithm:

log⁡a(xb)\displaystyle \log_{a}(x^{b}) =\displaystyle = b⋅log⁡ax\displaystyle b\cdot\log_{a}xx>0\displaystyle x>0
  • The law comes from (am)b=amb\displaystyle {(a^m)^b}={a^{mb}}.
  • 2log⁡5+log⁡4=log⁡52+log⁡4=log⁡25+log⁡4=log⁡100=2\displaystyle {2\log5+\log4}={\log5^2+\log4}={\log25+\log4}={\log100}={2}.
Careful: what the laws do not say
  • log⁡(x+y)\displaystyle \log(x+y) is not log⁡x+log⁡y\displaystyle \log x+\log y: log⁡(10+10)=log⁡20≈1.30\displaystyle {\log(10+10)}={\log20\approx1.30}, while log⁡10+log⁡10=2\displaystyle {\log10+\log10}={2}.
  • log⁡x⋅log⁡y\displaystyle \log x\cdot\log y is not log⁡(xy)\displaystyle \log(xy).
  • log⁡xlog⁡y\displaystyle \frac{\log x}{\log y} is not log⁡xy\displaystyle \log\frac{x}{y}.
  • The laws hold only where every logarithm in them is defined.
Writing as one logarithm, and back

The laws work both ways: from several logarithms to one, and from one logarithm to a sum.

  • log⁡2(8x)=log⁡28+log⁡2x=3+log⁡2x\displaystyle {\log_2(8x)}={\log_2 8+\log_2 x}={3+\log_2 x} (where x>0\displaystyle x>0).
  • log⁡3(9x2)=log⁡39+2log⁡3x=2+2log⁡3x\displaystyle {\log_3(9x^2)}={\log_3 9+2\log_3 x}={2+2\log_3 x} (where x>0\displaystyle x>0).
  • log⁡x+log⁡(x−3)=log⁡(x(x−3))=log⁡(x2−3x)\displaystyle {\log x+\log(x-3)}={\log(x(x-3))}={\log(x^2-3x)} (where x>3\displaystyle x>3).
An exponential equation: the logarithm of both sides

In 3x=20\displaystyle {3^x}={20}, 20 cannot be written as a whole power of 3. The solution below takes log⁡\displaystyle \log of both sides, and brings x\displaystyle x down from the exponent by the law of the logarithm of a power:

log⁡3x=log⁡20\log3^x=\log20
  • x⋅log⁡3=log⁡20\displaystyle {x\cdot\log3}={\log20}.
  • Divide by log⁡3\displaystyle \log3: x=log⁡20log⁡3\displaystyle {x}={\frac{\log20}{\log3}} – the exact answer.
  • With a calculator: x≈2.73\displaystyle x\approx2.73. A check: 32.73≈20\displaystyle 3^{2.73}\approx20.
