The laws of powers

The laws of powers

The laws of powers

In a power ax\displaystyle a^x, a\displaystyle a is the base and x\displaystyle x the exponent. Powers with the same base are multiplied and divided through their exponents:

ax⋅ay\displaystyle a^{x}\cdot a^{y} =\displaystyle = ax+y\displaystyle a^{x+y}
axay\displaystyle \frac{a^{x}}{a^{y}} =\displaystyle = ax−y\displaystyle a^{x-y}
(ax)y\displaystyle (a^{x})^{y} =\displaystyle = ax⋅y\displaystyle a^{x\cdot y}

A power of a product or of a quotient is the product or the quotient of the powers:

(a⋅b)x\displaystyle (a\cdot b)^{x} =\displaystyle = ax⋅bx\displaystyle a^{x}\cdot b^{x}
(ab)x\displaystyle \left(\frac{a}{b}\right)^{x} =\displaystyle = axbx\displaystyle \frac{a^{x}}{b^{x}}
The exponents 0 and negative

The quotient law gives a meaning to the exponent 0 and to a negative exponent: a3a3=a0\displaystyle {\frac{a^{3}}{a^{3}}}={a^{0}} is 1, and a2a5=a−3\displaystyle {\frac{a^{2}}{a^{5}}}={a^{-3}} is 1a3\displaystyle \frac{1}{a^{3}}.

a0\displaystyle a^{0} =\displaystyle = 1\displaystyle 1a≠0\displaystyle a\neq0
a−x\displaystyle a^{-x} =\displaystyle = 1ax\displaystyle \frac{1}{a^{x}}
  • 2−3=123=18\displaystyle {2^{-3}}={\frac{1}{2^{3}}}={\frac{1}{8}}.
  • (23)−2=(32)2=94\displaystyle {\left(\frac{2}{3}\right)^{-2}}={\left(\frac{3}{2}\right)^{2}}={\frac{9}{4}}: a negative exponent turns the fraction over.
A rational exponent

A fraction in the exponent is a root: the denominator is the root’s index, the numerator the power. The base is positive.

amn\displaystyle a^{\frac{m}{n}} =\displaystyle = amn\displaystyle \sqrt[n]{a^{m}}a>0\displaystyle a>0
  • 823=(83)2=22=4\displaystyle {8^{\frac{2}{3}}}={\left(\sqrt[3]{8}\right)^{2}}={2^{2}}={4}: it is easier to take the root first.
  • 16−34=11634=1(164)3=18\displaystyle {16^{-\frac{3}{4}}}={\frac{1}{16^{\frac{3}{4}}}}={\frac{1}{\left(\sqrt[4]{16}\right)^{3}}}={\frac{1}{8}}.
  • A root is a power: x=x12\displaystyle {\sqrt{x}}={x^{\frac{1}{2}}}, x23=x23\displaystyle {\sqrt[3]{x^{2}}}={x^{\frac{2}{3}}}, 1x=x−12\displaystyle {\frac{1}{\sqrt{x}}}={x^{-\frac{1}{2}}}.
  • All the laws of powers hold for rational exponents too.
A worked example: a number

The example below calculates 2723⋅9−12\displaystyle 27^{\frac{2}{3}}\cdot9^{-\frac{1}{2}} by writing both bases as powers of 3:

2723⋅9−12=(33)23⋅(32)−12=32⋅3−1=31=327^{\frac{2}{3}}\cdot9^{-\frac{1}{2}}=\left(3^{3}\right)^{\frac{2}{3}}\cdot\left(3^{2}\right)^{-\frac{1}{2}}=3^{2}\cdot3^{-1}=3^{1}=3
A worked example: letters

The example below simplifies an expression with a>0\displaystyle a>0, and writes the result with a positive exponent:

(a3)2⋅a−5a6=a6⋅a−5a3=a1a3=a−2=1a2\frac{(a^{3})^{2}\cdot a^{-5}}{\sqrt{a^{6}}}=\frac{a^{6}\cdot a^{-5}}{a^{3}}=\frac{a^{1}}{a^{3}}=a^{-2}=\frac{1}{a^{2}}
  • The root is a power: a6=a62=a3\displaystyle {\sqrt{a^{6}}}={a^{\frac{6}{2}}}={a^{3}}.
  • The exponents add up in the numerator, 6+(−5)=1\displaystyle {6+(-5)}={1}, and subtract in the quotient, 1−3=−2\displaystyle {1-3}={-2}.
