Calculations in a right-angled triangle

Calculations in a right-angled triangle

Finding a side

When an acute angle and one side are known, choose the function that links the known side to the side you want – by where they are next to the angle.

Example: in the triangle ABC\displaystyle ABC the angle C\displaystyle C is right, ∠A=30∘\displaystyle {\angle A}={30^{\circ}}, and the hypotenuse AB=12\displaystyle {AB}={12}.

  • BC\displaystyle BC is the side opposite A\displaystyle A, and AB\displaystyle AB the hypotenuse – the sine: BC=12⋅sin⁡30∘=12⋅12=6\displaystyle {BC}={12\cdot\sin30^{\circ}}={12\cdot\frac{1}{2}}={6};
  • AC\displaystyle AC is the side adjacent to A\displaystyle A – the cosine: AC=12⋅cos⁡30∘=12⋅32=63\displaystyle {AC}={12\cdot\cos30^{\circ}}={12\cdot\frac{\sqrt{3}}{2}}={6\sqrt{3}};
  • a check by Pythagoras: 62+(63)2=36+108=144=122\displaystyle {6^{2}+(6\sqrt{3})^{2}}={36+108}={144}={12^{2}}.

For BC\displaystyle BC the property from grade 9 works too: the side opposite an angle of 30∘\displaystyle 30^{\circ} is half the hypotenuse.

Finding an angle

When two sides are known, their ratio is the sine, cosine or tangent of the angle, and the calculator gives the angle.

Example: the legs are 3\displaystyle 3 and 4\displaystyle 4. The angle α\displaystyle \alpha opposite the leg 3\displaystyle 3:

tan⁡α=34⇒α=tan⁡−134≈36.87∘\tan\alpha=\frac{3}{4}\quad\Rightarrow\quad\alpha=\tan^{-1}\frac{3}{4}\approx36.87^{\circ}

And the other angle: 90∘−36.87∘=53.13∘\displaystyle {90^{\circ}-36.87^{\circ}}={53.13^{\circ}}.

When to round
  • With 30∘\displaystyle 30^{\circ}, 45∘\displaystyle 45^{\circ}, 60∘\displaystyle 60^{\circ} the result is exact: 63\displaystyle 6\sqrt{3}, not 10.39\displaystyle 10.39.
  • With another angle, write the exact expression, 12sin⁡40∘\displaystyle 12\sin40^{\circ}, and round only in the last line: ≈7.71\displaystyle \approx7.71.
  • A rounded number that you go on calculating with adds an error at each step.
  • Each step gets a reason: which function, which theorem, which property of the triangle.
