The tangent's equation and a circle tangent to the axes

The tangent's equation and a circle tangent to the axes

The tangent at a point of the circle

The tangent is perpendicular to the radius at the point of contact. So the equation of the tangent at a point A\displaystyle A of the circle is found by the perpendicularity condition:

  • Work out the slope m1\displaystyle m_1 of the radius, from the centre to A\displaystyle A.
  • The tangent’s slope m2\displaystyle m_2 satisfies m1⋅m2=−1\displaystyle {m_1\cdot m_2}={-1}, that is, m2=−1m1\displaystyle {m_2}={-\frac{1}{m_1}}.
  • Write the equation of the line through A\displaystyle A with the slope m2\displaystyle m_2, as in grade 10:
y−y1\displaystyle y-y_1 =\displaystyle = m(x−x1)\displaystyle m(x-x_1)
Example: a tangent to the circle x2+y2=25\displaystyle {x^{2}+y^{2}}={25}

The point A(3,4)\displaystyle A(3,4) is on the circle x2+y2=25\displaystyle {x^{2}+y^{2}}={25}, since 32+42=25\displaystyle {3^{2}+4^{2}}={25}.
Find the equation of the tangent to the circle at A\displaystyle A.

  • The centre is O(0,0)\displaystyle O(0,0). The slope of the radius OA\displaystyle OA: m1=4−03−0=43\displaystyle {m_1}={\frac{4-0}{3-0}}={\frac{4}{3}}.
  • The tangent’s slope: m2=−34\displaystyle {m_2}={-\frac{3}{4}}.
  • The line through A(3,4)\displaystyle A(3,4):
y−4=−34(x−3)⇒y=−34x+254y-4=-\frac{3}{4}(x-3)\quad\Rightarrow\quad y=-\frac{3}{4}x+\frac{25}{4}
x2+y2=25\displaystyle x^{2}+y^{2}=25
A=(3,4)\displaystyle A=(3,4)
y=−34x+254\displaystyle y=-\frac{3}{4}x+\frac{25}{4}
Horizontal and vertical tangents
The same holds for every diameter: the two tangents at its ends are both perpendicular to it, so they are parallel.

When the radius is parallel to one of the axes, the tangent is parallel to the other one – and no slope is needed.

  • The circle (x−2)2+(y+1)2=9\displaystyle {(x-2)^{2}+(y+1)^{2}}={9}: the centre M(2,−1)\displaystyle M(2,-1), the radius 3\displaystyle 3.
  • The circle’s highest point is (2,2)\displaystyle (2,2), and the tangent there is y=2\displaystyle {y}={2}.
  • Its lowest point is (2,−4)\displaystyle (2,-4), and the tangent there is y=−4\displaystyle {y}={-4}.
  • At the points (5,−1)\displaystyle (5,-1) and (−1,−1)\displaystyle (-1,-1) the tangents are vertical: x=5\displaystyle {x}={5} and x=−1\displaystyle {x}={-1}.
(x−2)2+(y+1)2=9\displaystyle (x-2)^{2}+(y+1)^{2}=9
M=(2,−1)\displaystyle M=(2,-1)
y=2\displaystyle y=2
y=−4\displaystyle y=-4
A tangent: one solution of the system

A line is a tangent to a circle if and only if it has exactly one point in common with it. So the system of the circle’s equation and the tangent’s has exactly one solution.

In the example above we substitute y=−34x+254\displaystyle {y}={-\frac{3}{4}x+\frac{25}{4}} into x2+y2=25\displaystyle {x^{2}+y^{2}}={25} and, after collecting like terms, get:

2516x2−758x+22516=0⇒x2−6x+9=0⇒(x−3)2=0\frac{25}{16}x^{2}-\frac{75}{8}x+\frac{225}{16}=0\quad\Rightarrow\quad x^{2}-6x+9=0\quad\Rightarrow\quad(x-3)^{2}=0
  • There is one solution, x=3\displaystyle {x}={3}, and then y=4\displaystyle {y}={4} – the point of contact A(3,4)\displaystyle A(3,4).
  • A line that cuts the circle gives two solutions, and a line that misses it gives none.
A circle tangent to the axes

The centre (a,b)\displaystyle (a,b) is ∣b∣\displaystyle |b| from the x\displaystyle x-axis and ∣a∣\displaystyle |a| from the y\displaystyle y-axis. An axis is a tangent to the circle when the centre’s distance from it equals the radius:

  • the circle touches the x\displaystyle x-axis when R=∣b∣\displaystyle {R}={|b|};
  • the circle touches the y\displaystyle y-axis when R=∣a∣\displaystyle {R}={|a|};
  • the circle touches both axes when ∣a∣=∣b∣=R\displaystyle {|a|}={|b|}={R}.
(x−3)2+(y+2)2=4\displaystyle (x-3)^{2}+(y+2)^{2}=4
(x+4)2+(y−4)2=16\displaystyle (x+4)^{2}+(y-4)^{2}=16
  • The circle (x−3)2+(y+2)2=4\displaystyle {(x-3)^{2}+(y+2)^{2}}={4}: the centre (3,−2)\displaystyle (3,-2), the radius 2=∣−2∣\displaystyle {2}={|-2|} – it touches the x\displaystyle x-axis at (3,0)\displaystyle (3,0) and does not meet the y\displaystyle y-axis.
  • The circle (x+4)2+(y−4)2=16\displaystyle {(x+4)^{2}+(y-4)^{2}}={16}: the centre (−4,4)\displaystyle (-4,4), the radius 4\displaystyle 4 – it touches both axes, in the second quadrant.
