Space geometry and vectors, grade 12 (4 units)

Space geometry and vectors, grade 12, 4 study units.Subjects

The topics, in order:

  • lines and planes in space: determining a plane, the positions of two lines, of a line and a plane and of two planes, a line perpendicular to a plane;
  • the prism and the pyramid: their parts, the height, the lateral and the total surface area; the parallelepiped, the box and the cube, the right pyramid;
  • vectors, geometrically: equal, opposite and collinear vectors, adding, subtracting and multiplying by a number, linear combinations;
  • the axes in space and vectors in coordinates;
  • the scalar product: the angle between vectors, lengths, angles and areas, perpendicular vectors and a vector perpendicular to a plane;
  • the volume of a prism and a pyramid.

The course builds on the trigonometry and geometry of grades 10 and 11 (4 units): trigonometry in a right-angled triangle, the sine of an obtuse angle and a triangle’s area by the sine. What it needs of them is recapped in the lessons themselves.

Two kinds of lessons:

  • learning lessons – an explanation, solved examples and a few questions to try;
  • practice lessons – questions only.

How the page works: Using a page.

  1. Lines and planes in spaceLearningPoints, lines and planes in a box; four ways to determine a plane; two lines in space: intersecting, parallel and skew.
  2. A line and a plane, two planesLearningA line lies in a plane, meets it at one point or is parallel to it; two planes meet along a line or are parallel.
  3. A line perpendicular to a planeLearningA recap of trigonometry in a right-angled triangle; a line perpendicular to a plane – the definition and the sufficient condition; right-angled triangles inside a box.
  4. The prism: its parts, lateral area and surface areaLearningA prism, not necessarily right – base, face, edge, diagonal and height; the parallelepiped, the right prism, the box and the cube; the lateral area and the surface area.
  5. The pyramid: its parts, its height and surface areaLearningA pyramid, not necessarily right – the apex, the base, the faces, the edges and the height; the right pyramid and its height; the lateral area and the surface area.
  6. Practice: lines, planes, prisms and pyramidsPracticePositions in a box, the lateral and surface areas of a prism and a pyramid, diagonals and angles.
  7. The vector: a length and a directionLearningA vector in the plane and in space, its notation, its length, the zero vector; equal, opposite and collinear vectors.
  8. Adding, subtracting and multiplying by a numberLearningAdding vectors by the triangle and parallelogram rules, subtracting, multiplying a vector by a number, and the laws of the operations; vectors in a parallelogram and a box.
  9. Collinear vectors: parallel lines and points on one lineLearningThe necessary and sufficient condition for collinear vectors; a point dividing a segment in a given ratio; proving that lines are parallel and that points are on one line.
  10. Linear combinations of vectorsLearningA linear combination; the unique way of writing a vector in the plane and in space; comparing coefficients to find where lines meet; a line parallel to a plane, by vectors.
  11. Practice: vectors, geometricallyPracticeSimplifying vector expressions, vectors in a triangle, a trapezoid and a pyramid, points on one line, a line parallel to a plane and where lines meet.
  12. The axes in spaceLearningThree perpendicular axes; the coordinates of a point in space; points in the planes xy, xz, yz and on the axes; a box on the axes; a point's distance from the origin.
  13. Vectors in coordinatesLearningThe unit vectors of the axes; a vector as an ordered triple; the vector between two points; equality, adding, multiplying by a number and collinearity; a vector's length; a linear combination by a system of equations.
  14. The scalar productLearningThe angle between two vectors; the cosine of a right and an obtuse angle; the definition of the scalar product and its properties – a vector's length, commutativity, homogeneity, the distributive law and the short products.
  15. Lengths, angles and areas by the scalar productLearningBase vectors in a solid and the table of their products; the length of a segment, the angle between segments and a triangle's area in a pyramid, a prism and a cube.
  16. The scalar product in coordinatesLearningThe scalar product from the coordinates; a vector's length; the angles and areas of a triangle and a parallelogram whose vertices are given.
  17. Perpendicularity: perpendicular vectors and a vector perpendicular to a planeLearningVectors are perpendicular if and only if their scalar product is 0; a vector perpendicular to a plane – the definition and the sufficient condition; proving that a segment is a solid's height.
  18. The volume of a prism and a pyramidLearningThe volume of a prism and of a pyramid; the height of a solid that is not right – from coordinates, from a perpendicular edge, proved by the scalar product, by Pythagoras and trigonometry.
  19. Practice: the scalar product, perpendicularity and volumesPracticeLengths and angles by the scalar product, a right pyramid in coordinates, where the medians meet, lateral area and volume, the angle between a cube's diagonals.
  20. Review: space geometry and vectorsPracticeQuestions on every topic: positions in a pyramid, vectors in a triangle, a prism on a parallelogram, a right pyramid in coordinates and a linear combination.
