Lengths, angles and areas by the scalar product

Lengths, angles and areas by the scalar product

The method

To find a length or an angle in a solid with vectors:

  • choose base vectors – three edges or segments whose lengths and the angles between them are known, not in one plane;
  • work out the table of their products: each vector squared, and each pair. A vector perpendicular to a plane – its product with every vector of that plane is 0;
  • express the segments asked for as combinations of the base vectors;
  • a length: ∣a⃗∣=a⃗2\displaystyle {|\vec{a}|}={\sqrt{\vec{a}^2}}, expanded by the short products;
  • an angle: cos⁡α=a⃗⋅b⃗∣a⃗∣⋅∣b⃗∣\displaystyle {\cos\alpha}={\frac{\vec{a}\cdot\vec{b}}{|\vec{a}|\cdot|\vec{b}|}} – with both segments leaving the same point;
  • a triangle’s area from two sides and the angle between them (grade 11):
S\displaystyle S =\displaystyle = 12absin⁡γ\displaystyle \frac{1}{2}ab\sin\gamma
Example: a right pyramid

wuvABCDSO

In the right pyramid SABCD\displaystyle SABCD the base ABCD\displaystyle ABCD is a rectangle, and SO\displaystyle SO is the height.
AB=4\displaystyle {AB}={4}, BC=3\displaystyle {BC}={3}, SO=5\displaystyle {SO}={5}.
AB→=u⃗\displaystyle {\overrightarrow{AB}}={\vec{u}}, BC→=v⃗\displaystyle {\overrightarrow{BC}}={\vec{v}}, OS→=w⃗\displaystyle {\overrightarrow{OS}}={\vec{w}}.
Find the angle BSC\displaystyle BSC.

  • The table of products: u⃗2=16\displaystyle {\vec{u}^2}={16}, v⃗2=9\displaystyle {\vec{v}^2}={9}, w⃗2=25\displaystyle {\vec{w}^2}={25}. u⃗⋅v⃗=0\displaystyle {\vec{u}\cdot\vec{v}}={0} (a rectangle), u⃗⋅w⃗=v⃗⋅w⃗=0\displaystyle {\vec{u}\cdot\vec{w}}={\vec{v}\cdot\vec{w}}={0} (the height is perpendicular to the base).
  • O\displaystyle O is the diagonals’ midpoint: OB→=12DB→=12u⃗−12v⃗\displaystyle {\overrightarrow{OB}}={\frac{1}{2}\overrightarrow{DB}}={\frac{1}{2}\vec{u}-\frac{1}{2}\vec{v}}, and OC→=12u⃗+12v⃗\displaystyle {\overrightarrow{OC}}={\frac{1}{2}\vec{u}+\frac{1}{2}\vec{v}}.
  • SB→=−w⃗+12u⃗−12v⃗\displaystyle {\overrightarrow{SB}}={-\vec{w}+\frac{1}{2}\vec{u}-\frac{1}{2}\vec{v}}, SC→=−w⃗+12u⃗+12v⃗\displaystyle {\overrightarrow{SC}}={-\vec{w}+\frac{1}{2}\vec{u}+\frac{1}{2}\vec{v}}.
  • ∣SB→∣2=25+14⋅16+14⋅9=31.25\displaystyle {|\overrightarrow{SB}|^2}={25+\frac{1}{4}\cdot16+\frac{1}{4}\cdot9}={31.25}, and ∣SC→∣2=31.25\displaystyle {|\overrightarrow{SC}|^2}={31.25} as well. (All the mixed products are 0.)
  • SB→⋅SC→=w⃗2+14u⃗2−14v⃗2=25+4−2.25=26.75\displaystyle {\overrightarrow{SB}\cdot\overrightarrow{SC}}={\vec{w}^2+\frac{1}{4}\vec{u}^2-\frac{1}{4}\vec{v}^2}={25+4-2.25}={26.75}.
  • cos⁡∠BSC=26.7531.25\displaystyle {\cos\angle BSC}={\frac{26.75}{31.25}}, so ∠BSC≈31.13∘\displaystyle \angle BSC\approx31.13^{\circ}.
