The tangent to a circle at a point on it
The tangent to a circle at a point on it
In geometry we learnt: the tangent to a circle is perpendicular to the radius at the point of contact. So the tangent at a point on the circle is found like this:
- the slope of the radius ;
- the tangent’s slope – the product of the slopes is ;
- the equation of the line through with this slope.
An example: the circle and the point on it ().
- , so the tangent’s slope is .
- , in implicit form .
The same three steps, in letters, give a formula. The circle and the point on it:
- the tangent’s equation by the slopes: .
- Write and , and open the brackets.
- appears, and it is , because the point is on the circle.
In the same example: , that is , and again .
The formula works also when the tangent is parallel to the -axis and has no slope: in this circle, at the point , it gives , that is .
When a circle is shifted, its tangent moves with it by the same shift.
- The tangent to the circle at the point is .
- Shift the circle to the right: , and the point of contact moves to .
- The tangent moves to the right too: is replaced by , giving , that is .
