The hyperbola: a locus, its equation and asymptotes

The hyperbola: a locus, its equation and asymptotes

The difference of the distances from two foci

A hyperbola is the locus of all the points in the plane whose distances from two given points, the foci, differ by a constant. The constant is called 2a\displaystyle 2a, and it is less than the distance 2c\displaystyle 2c between the foci.

With the foci F1(−c,0)\displaystyle F_1(-c,0) and F2(c,0)\displaystyle F_2(c,0) the condition is ∣PF1−PF2∣=2a\displaystyle {|PF_1-PF_2|}={2a}. The same steps as for the ellipse – isolate a root and square twice – lead to (c2−a2)x2−a2y2=a2(c2−a2)\displaystyle {(c^{2}-a^{2})x^{2}-a^{2}y^{2}}={a^{2}(c^{2}-a^{2})}. This time c>a\displaystyle c>a, and we write b2=c2−a2\displaystyle {b^{2}}={c^{2}-a^{2}}. This gives the canonical equation of the hyperbola:

x2a2−y2b2=1\displaystyle \frac{x^{2}}{a^{2}}-\frac{y^{2}}{b^{2}}=1
c\displaystyle c =\displaystyle = a2+b2\displaystyle \sqrt{a^{2}+b^{2}}
  • Symmetry about both axes and the origin.
  • The vertices (±a,0)\displaystyle (\pm a,0). The y\displaystyle y-axis is not met: x=0\displaystyle {x}={0} gives y2=−b2\displaystyle {y^{2}}={-b^{2}}.
  • Two branches: x2a2=1+y2b2≥1\displaystyle {\frac{x^{2}}{a^{2}}}={1+\frac{y^{2}}{b^{2}}\ge1}, so x≥a\displaystyle x\ge a (the right branch, near F2\displaystyle F_2) or x≤−a\displaystyle x\le-a (the left branch).
The asymptotes

Isolate y\displaystyle y: y=±bax2−a2\displaystyle {y}={\pm\frac{b}{a}\sqrt{x^{2}-a^{2}}}. When x\displaystyle x is very large, x2−a2\displaystyle \sqrt{x^{2}-a^{2}} is almost ∣x∣\displaystyle |x|, and the hyperbola comes close to the lines

y=±bax\displaystyle y=\pm\frac{b}{a}x

– the asymptotes of the hyperbola. They pass through the origin, and the hyperbola comes closer and closer to them without meeting them.

An example: x216−y29=1\displaystyle {\frac{x^{2}}{16}-\frac{y^{2}}{9}}={1}: a=4\displaystyle {a}={4}, b=3\displaystyle {b}={3}, c=16+9=5\displaystyle {c}={\sqrt{16+9}}={5}.

  • The vertices are (±4,0)\displaystyle (\pm4,0), the foci (±5,0)\displaystyle (\pm5,0), and the asymptotes y=±34x\displaystyle {y}={\pm\frac{3}{4}x}.
  • A check at the vertex (4,0)\displaystyle (4,0): its distances from the foci are 9\displaystyle 9 and 1\displaystyle 1, and the difference is 8=2a\displaystyle {8}={2a}.
x216−y29=1\displaystyle \frac{x^{2}}{16}-\frac{y^{2}}{9}=1
y=34x\displaystyle y=\frac{3}{4}x
y=−34x\displaystyle y=-\frac{3}{4}x
F1=(−5,0)\displaystyle F_1=(-5,0)
F2=(5,0)\displaystyle F_2=(5,0)
Foci on the y\displaystyle y-axis

When the foci are on the y\displaystyle y-axis, the signs swap: −x2a2+y2b2=1\displaystyle {-\frac{x^{2}}{a^{2}}+\frac{y^{2}}{b^{2}}}={1}.

  • The vertices are (0,±b)\displaystyle (0,\pm b), the branches go up and down, and the foci are (0,±c)\displaystyle (0,\pm c) with c=a2+b2\displaystyle {c}={\sqrt{a^{2}+b^{2}}}.
  • The asymptotes are the same: y=±bax\displaystyle {y}={\pm\frac{b}{a}x}.

For example, −x29+y216=1\displaystyle {-\frac{x^{2}}{9}+\frac{y^{2}}{16}}={1}: the vertices are (0,±4)\displaystyle (0,\pm4) and the foci (0,±5)\displaystyle (0,\pm5).
