A line and a circle: their positions

A line and a circle: their positions

Two ways to find the position

A line and a circle of radius R\displaystyle R meet at two points, at one or at none. The position is found in two ways:

  • The distance d\displaystyle d of the centre from the line (by the formula): d<R\displaystyle d<R – the line cuts the circle; d=R\displaystyle {d}={R} – it is a tangent; d>R\displaystyle d>R – it misses the circle.
  • The system of equations: put the line into the circle’s equation and get a quadratic equation. Its discriminant positive – two points; zero – one point, a tangent; negative – no common point.

An example: the circle (x−1)2+(y+2)2=10\displaystyle {(x-1)^{2}+(y+2)^{2}}={10} and the line x−3y+3=0\displaystyle {x-3y+3}={0}.

  • By the distance: d=∣1−3⋅(−2)+3∣1+9=1010=10=R\displaystyle {d}={\frac{|1-3\cdot(-2)+3|}{\sqrt{1+9}}}={\frac{10}{\sqrt{10}}}={\sqrt{10}}={R} – the line is a tangent to the circle.
  • By the system: x=3y−3\displaystyle {x}={3y-3}, and in the circle’s equation (3y−4)2+(y+2)2=10\displaystyle {(3y-4)^{2}+(y+2)^{2}}={10}, that is 10y2−20y+10=0\displaystyle {10y^{2}-20y+10}={0}, or (y−1)2=0\displaystyle {(y-1)^{2}}={0}. One solution: y=1\displaystyle {y}={1}, x=0\displaystyle {x}={0} – the point of contact (0,1)\displaystyle (0,1).
(x−1)2+(y+2)2=10\displaystyle (x-1)^{2}+(y+2)^{2}=10
x−3y+3=0\displaystyle x-3y+3=0
M=(1,−2)\displaystyle M=(1,-2)
(0,1)\displaystyle (0,1)
The length of a chord

When the line cuts the circle, it makes a chord. The perpendicular from the centre to the chord bisects it, so by Pythagoras’ theorem:

ℓ2\displaystyle \frac{\ell}{2} =\displaystyle = R2−d2\displaystyle \sqrt{R^{2}-d^{2}}

ℓ\displaystyle \ell – the chord’s length, d\displaystyle d – the centre’s distance from the line.

An example: the circle x2+y2=25\displaystyle {x^{2}+y^{2}}={25} and the line 3x+4y=15\displaystyle {3x+4y}={15}: d=155=3\displaystyle {d}={\frac{15}{5}}={3}, so ℓ2=25−9=4\displaystyle {\frac{\ell}{2}}={\sqrt{25-9}}={4}, and the chord is 8\displaystyle 8.

A parameter that decides the position

For which values of n\displaystyle n does the line y=x+n\displaystyle {y}={x+n} cut the circle x2+y2=8\displaystyle {x^{2}+y^{2}}={8}?

  • The line in implicit form: x−y+n=0\displaystyle {x-y+n}={0}, and d=∣n∣2\displaystyle {d}={\frac{|n|}{\sqrt{2}}}.
  • The line cuts when d<R=8\displaystyle {d<R}={\sqrt{8}}: ∣n∣<2⋅8=4\displaystyle {|n|<\sqrt{2}\cdot\sqrt{8}}={4}, that is −4<n<4\displaystyle -4<n<4.
  • When n=4\displaystyle {n}={4} or n=−4\displaystyle {n}={-4} the line is a tangent, and when ∣n∣>4\displaystyle |n|>4 it misses.
Exercise 1

The circle x2+y2−4x+2y−20=0\displaystyle {x^{2}+y^{2}-4x+2y-20}={0} and the line 3x+4y+18=0\displaystyle {3x+4y+18}={0}.
