The derivative at a point: the limit of the secants' slopes
The derivative at a point: the limit of the secants' slopes
When you zoom in on a graph around a point on it, it looks straighter and straighter, until the eye cannot tell it from a straight line. That line, the closest to the graph near the point, is the tangent to the graph at the point.
The board below shows the graph of and its tangent at the point . Zoom in around the point and watch the graph and the tangent come together.
- The tangent describes where the graph goes near the point.
- The slope of the tangent is positive – the function rises there; negative – it falls.
- Here the slope of the tangent is 2. How is it worked out? That is what this lesson is about.
Take the point on the graph where , and a point close to it where . The slope of the secant through them is the average rate of change between them:
- The smaller is, the closer the second point comes to the first, and the closer the secant comes to the tangent.
- So the slope of the tangent is the number the slopes of the secants approach as approaches 0.
- We write “” and read “ tends to 0”. The number approaches is 0, but itself is never 0 – otherwise there is no secant, and no dividing by 0 either.
An alien car travels along a track. After seconds it has covered metres.
In the first 5 seconds the car covered metres, so its average speed was metres per second. But what is its speed exactly at the moment ?
The example below works out the average speed over shorter and shorter times after the fifth second:
- In the thousandth of a second after : metres per second.
- Over a general time :
- As , the expression tends to 20.
The car’s speed at the moment is 20 metres per second: this is the instantaneous speed, what a car’s speedometer shows.
The derivative of at the point , written , is the number the slopes of the secants tend to as . With the limit sign (lim):
- is the slope of the tangent to the graph at the point where .
- is the instantaneous rate of change of at ; when is distance against time – the instantaneous speed.
- It can also be written with arrows: .
The example below finds for by the definition.
- .
- .
- The slope of the secant: .
- As , tends to 1, so .
Note the order: first simplify the fraction and cancel , and only then ask what the expression tends to. Putting into the fraction itself gives , which is not a number.
