Extremum problems with square root and rational functions

Extremum problems with square root and rational functions

The steps of a solution

An extremum problem with a root or a fraction is solved in the same steps as one with a polynomial:

  • Choose a variable x\displaystyle x, and write the quantity to make smallest or largest as a function of it.
  • Fix the domain of x\displaystyle x from the problem: a positive length, a point between two places.
  • Differentiate, and solve f′(x)=0\displaystyle {f'(x)}={0}. A solution outside the domain is rejected.
  • Make sure it is a minimum or a maximum: in an open domain – a table of signs of f′\displaystyle f'; in a closed domain – compare with the values at its ends too.

In today’s problems the function holds a fraction such as 72x\displaystyle \frac{72}{x} or a root such as x2+9\displaystyle \sqrt{x^2+9}.

Example: the least perimeter

A rectangle has an area of 36 cm2\displaystyle 36\text{ cm}^2.
What is the least perimeter it can have?

The solution below takes one side as the variable and writes the perimeter with it:

  • One side is x\displaystyle x, the other 36x\displaystyle \frac{36}{x}; the domain is x>0\displaystyle x>0.
  • P(x)=2x+72x\displaystyle {P(x)}={2x+\frac{72}{x}}.
  • P′(x)=2−72x2=0\displaystyle {P'(x)}={2-\frac{72}{x^2}}={0}, so x2=36\displaystyle {x^2}={36} and x=6\displaystyle {x}={6} (x=−6\displaystyle {x}={-6} is outside the domain).
x\displaystyle x0<x<6\displaystyle 0<x<66\displaystyle 6x>6\displaystyle x>6
P′(x)\displaystyle P'(x)−0+
P(x)\displaystyle P(x)fallsminimumrises

The rectangle is a 6×6\displaystyle 6\times6 square, and the least perimeter is P(6)=12+12=24\displaystyle {P(6)}={12+12}={24} cm.

Example: the shortest distance from a point to a graph

Find the point on the graph of y=x\displaystyle {y}={\sqrt{x}} closest to the point A(3,0)\displaystyle A(3,0).

The solution below writes the distance with the x\displaystyle x-coordinate of a point on the graph:

  • A point on the graph is (x,x)\displaystyle (x,\sqrt{x}), and x≥0\displaystyle x\geq0.
  • By the distance formula: d(x)=(x−3)2+(x−0)2=x2−5x+9\displaystyle {d(x)}={\sqrt{(x-3)^2+(\sqrt{x}-0)^2}}={\sqrt{x^2-5x+9}}.
  • d′(x)=2x−52x2−5x+9\displaystyle {d'(x)}={\frac{2x-5}{2\sqrt{x^2-5x+9}}}. The denominator is positive, so d′(x)=0\displaystyle {d'(x)}={0} where 2x−5=0\displaystyle {2x-5}={0}, that is x=2.5\displaystyle {x}={2.5}.
  • To the left of 2.5 the derivative is negative, to the right positive: a minimum.
f(x)=x\displaystyle f(x)=\sqrt{x}
A=(3,0)\displaystyle A=(3,0)
P=(2.5,1.5811)\displaystyle P=(2.5,1.5811)
  • The closest point is (2.5,2.5)\displaystyle (2.5,\sqrt{2.5}), and the shortest distance is d(2.5)=2.75=112≈1.66\displaystyle {d(2.5)}={\sqrt{2.75}}={\frac{\sqrt{11}}{2}\approx1.66}.
  • The sign of d′\displaystyle d' is the sign of 2x−5\displaystyle 2x-5 – the derivative of the expression under the root. So you can also find the minimum of x2−5x+9\displaystyle x^2-5x+9: where the expression under the root is smallest, the root is smallest too.
