Investigating a polynomial

Investigating a polynomial

The steps of an investigation

Investigating a function gathers everything a graph tells – without the graph, from the formula. At the end there are enough points and intervals to draw a sketch: a graph whose shape is right, even if it is not exact. The steps:

  • The domain: a polynomial is defined for every x\displaystyle x.
  • The points on the axes: f(x)=0\displaystyle {f(x)}={0} – on the x\displaystyle x-axis; f(0)\displaystyle f(0) – on the y\displaystyle y-axis.
  • Even or odd: check whether f(−x)=f(x)\displaystyle {f(-x)}={f(x)} or f(−x)=−f(x)\displaystyle {f(-x)}={-f(x)}. If so, investigating the right-hand side is enough, and the graph is symmetric.
  • Extremum points: solve f′(x)=0\displaystyle {f'(x)}={0}, and make a table of signs of f′\displaystyle f'.
  • Where it rises and falls: read it from the same table.
  • A sketch: mark all the points you found, and join them as the function rises and falls.
Example: f(x)=x4−4x3\displaystyle {f(x)}={x^4-4x^3}

The example below investigates f(x)=x4−4x3\displaystyle {f(x)}={x^4-4x^3}:

  • The domain: every x\displaystyle x.
  • x4−4x3=x3(x−4)=0\displaystyle {x^4-4x^3}={x^3(x-4)}={0} where x=0\displaystyle {x}={0} or x=4\displaystyle {x}={4}: the points on the axes are (0,0)\displaystyle (0,0) and (4,0)\displaystyle (4,0).
  • f(1)=−3\displaystyle {f(1)}={-3} and f(−1)=5\displaystyle {f(-1)}={5}: the function is neither even nor odd.
  • f′(x)=4x3−12x2=4x2(x−3)\displaystyle {f'(x)}={4x^3-12x^2}={4x^2(x-3)}, which is 0 at x=0\displaystyle {x}={0} and at x=3\displaystyle {x}={3}.
x\displaystyle xx<0\displaystyle x<00\displaystyle 00<x<3\displaystyle 0<x<33\displaystyle 3x>3\displaystyle x>3
f′(x)\displaystyle f'(x)−0−0+
f(x)\displaystyle f(x)fallsno extremumfallsminimumrises
f(x)=x4−4x3\displaystyle f(x)=x^{4}-4x^{3}
A=(3,−27)\displaystyle A=(3,-27)
B=(4,0)\displaystyle B=(4,0)
  • f(3)=81−108=−27\displaystyle {f(3)}={81-108}={-27}: a minimum point (3,−27)\displaystyle (3,-27).
  • At x=0\displaystyle {x}={0} the tangent is horizontal, but the function falls on both sides – there is no extremum there.
  • The function falls where x<3\displaystyle x<3 and rises where x>3\displaystyle x>3.
Investigating in a closed interval

When the function is defined only in a closed interval, such as −2≤x≤4\displaystyle -2\leq x\leq4, the investigation adds the ends of the interval: they are extremum points too, and candidates for the absolute extremum.

The example below finds the absolute maximum and the absolute minimum of f(x)=x3−3x2\displaystyle {f(x)}={x^3-3x^2} in the interval −2≤x≤4\displaystyle -2\leq x\leq4:

  • f′(x)=3x2−6x=3x(x−2)\displaystyle {f'(x)}={3x^2-6x}={3x(x-2)} is 0 at x=0\displaystyle {x}={0} and at x=2\displaystyle {x}={2}.
  • We work out the values at these points and at the ends: f(−2)=−20\displaystyle {f(-2)}={-20}, f(0)=0\displaystyle {f(0)}={0}, f(2)=−4\displaystyle {f(2)}={-4}, f(4)=16\displaystyle {f(4)}={16}.
  • The greatest value, 16, is the absolute maximum – at an end, x=4\displaystyle {x}={4}. The least, −20\displaystyle -20, is the absolute minimum – at an end, x=−2\displaystyle {x}={-2}.
A parameter

A parameter is a letter standing for a fixed number, like a\displaystyle a in f(x)=x3+ax2\displaystyle {f(x)}={x^3+ax^2}. A fact about the function gives an equation the parameter solves.

The example below finds a\displaystyle a, given that f(x)=x3+ax2\displaystyle {f(x)}={x^3+ax^2} has an extremum point at x=2\displaystyle {x}={2}:

  • At an extremum point the derivative is 0, so f′(2)=0\displaystyle {f'(2)}={0}.
  • f′(x)=3x2+2ax\displaystyle {f'(x)}={3x^2+2ax}, so f′(2)=12+4a=0\displaystyle {f'(2)}={12+4a}={0}, and a=−3\displaystyle {a}={-3}.
  • We check that it really is an extremum: f′(x)=3x2−6x=3x(x−2)\displaystyle {f'(x)}={3x^2-6x}={3x(x-2)} changes sign at x=2\displaystyle {x}={2} from − to +, so there is a minimum there.
The number of solutions of f(x)=k\displaystyle {f(x)}={k}

The solutions of the equation f(x)=k\displaystyle {f(x)}={k} are the x\displaystyle x-coordinates of the points where the graph of f\displaystyle f meets the horizontal line y=k\displaystyle {y}={k}. So the investigation tells how many solutions there are, even when the equation cannot be solved.

f(x)=x3−3x\displaystyle {f(x)}={x^3-3x} has a maximum (−1,2)\displaystyle (-1,2) and a minimum (1,−2)\displaystyle (1,-2), and it rises without end to the right and falls without end to the left. The board below shows the line y=1\displaystyle {y}={1}:

f(x)=x3−3x\displaystyle f(x)=x^{3}-3x
y=1\displaystyle y=1
A=(−1,2)\displaystyle A=(-1,2)
B=(1,−2)\displaystyle B=(1,-2)
  • −2<k<2\displaystyle -2<k<2: the line meets the graph three times – three solutions. So does the equation x3−3x=1\displaystyle {x^3-3x}={1}.
  • k=2\displaystyle {k}={2} or k=−2\displaystyle {k}={-2}: the line passes through an extremum point and touches the graph there – two solutions.
  • k>2\displaystyle k>2 or k<−2\displaystyle k<-2: one solution.
