Investigating a square root function
Investigating a square root function
A root function is investigated like a polynomial, with two differences: the domain is limited, and its ends play a part.
- The domain: what is under the root .
- The points where the graph meets the axes.
- The derivative, and the solutions of . The derivative is not defined at an end where the root is 0.
- A table of signs of , which starts and ends at the ends of the domain.
- Extremum points: a point at an end of the domain is an extremum point too – an extremum at the end – by what the function does beside it.
- A sketch of the graph.
The example below investigates .
- The domain: , that is .
- The zeros: and ; and on the -axis: .
- , which is 0 at .
| + | 0 | − | |||
| minimum at the end | rises | maximum | falls | minimum at the end |
- – a maximum point.
- and – minimum points at the end: from the function rises, and towards 2 it falls.
- The graph is half a circle: is the upper half of the circle .
The example below investigates , a product of and a root.
- The domain: , that is .
- The zeros: and .
- By the product rule and the derivative of the root:
- where , that is . The denominator is positive, so has the sign of .
| + | 0 | − | ||
| rises | maximum | falls | minimum at the end |
- : a maximum point.
- – a minimum point at the end.
- As falls without end, so does , so the function has no absolute minimum.
