The derivative of the square root function

The derivative of the square root function

The derivative of x\displaystyle \sqrt{x} from the definition

The derivative of x\displaystyle \sqrt{x} is 12x\displaystyle \frac{1}{2\sqrt{x}}. The proof below writes the average rate of change of x\displaystyle \sqrt{x} from x\displaystyle x to x+h\displaystyle x+h, multiplies the numerator and the denominator by the conjugate x+h+x\displaystyle \sqrt{x+h}+\sqrt{x}, and shows which number the quotient approaches as h→0\displaystyle h\to0.

x+h−xh=(x+h−x)(x+h+x)h(x+h+x)\frac{\sqrt{x+h}-\sqrt{x}}{h}=\frac{(\sqrt{x+h}-\sqrt{x})(\sqrt{x+h}+\sqrt{x})}{h(\sqrt{x+h}+\sqrt{x})}
  • The numerator is a difference of two squares: (x+h)2−(x)2=(x+h)−x=h\displaystyle {(\sqrt{x+h})^2-(\sqrt{x})^2}={(x+h)-x}={h}.
=hh(x+h+x)=1x+h+x=\frac{h}{h(\sqrt{x+h}+\sqrt{x})}=\frac{1}{\sqrt{x+h}+\sqrt{x}}
  • As h→0\displaystyle h\to0, x+h→x\displaystyle \sqrt{x+h}\to\sqrt{x}, so the denominator approaches 2x\displaystyle 2\sqrt{x}.
(x)′\displaystyle (\sqrt{x})' =\displaystyle = 12x\displaystyle \frac{1}{2\sqrt{x}}x>0\displaystyle x>0
The derivative by the reflection

x\displaystyle \sqrt{x} is the reflection of x2\displaystyle x^2 (where x≥0\displaystyle x\geq0) in the line y=x\displaystyle {y}={x}, so their tangents are reflections of each other too. A reflection swaps the “step right” and the “step up”, so the slope of the reflected tangent is the reciprocal of the original slope.

On the graph below:

  • The tangent to y=x2\displaystyle {y}={x^2} at the point (2,4)\displaystyle (2,4) has the slope 2⋅2=4\displaystyle {2\cdot2}={4}.
  • The tangent to y=x\displaystyle {y}={\sqrt{x}} at the point (4,2)\displaystyle (4,2) is its reflection, and its slope is 14\displaystyle \frac{1}{4}.
f(x)=x2\displaystyle f(x)=x^{2}
g(x)=x\displaystyle g(x)=\sqrt{x}
y=x\displaystyle y=x
y=4x−4\displaystyle y=4x-4
y=14x+1\displaystyle y=\frac{1}{4}x+1
A=(2,4)\displaystyle A=(2,4)
B=(4,2)\displaystyle B=(4,2)

In general, at the point (a,a2)\displaystyle (a,a^2) the slope of the tangent to the parabola is 2a\displaystyle 2a, and at the reflected point (a2,a)\displaystyle (a^2,a) the slope of the tangent to the root is 12a\displaystyle \frac{1}{2a}. Here x=a2\displaystyle {x}={a^2}, that is a=x\displaystyle {a}={\sqrt{x}} – and again we get 12x\displaystyle \frac{1}{2\sqrt{x}}.

A vertical tangent at the origin

At x=0\displaystyle {x}={0}, x\displaystyle \sqrt{x} has no derivative: 120\displaystyle \frac{1}{2\sqrt{0}} is a division by 0. The graph shows why:

  • The tangent to the parabola at the origin is the x\displaystyle x-axis, with slope 0.
  • Its reflection is the y\displaystyle y-axis: a vertical tangent, and a vertical line has no slope.
  • As x\displaystyle x gets close to 0, 12x\displaystyle \frac{1}{2\sqrt{x}} grows without limit – the graph gets steeper and steeper.
The root of a function

By the chain rule, the derivative of f(x)\displaystyle \sqrt{f(x)} is the outer derivative, 12f(x)\displaystyle \frac{1}{2\sqrt{f(x)}}, times the inner derivative, f′(x)\displaystyle f'(x):

(f(x))′\displaystyle (\sqrt{f(x)})' =\displaystyle = f′(x)2f(x)\displaystyle \frac{f'(x)}{2\sqrt{f(x)}}f(x)>0\displaystyle f(x)>0
  • (ax+b)′=a2ax+b\displaystyle {(\sqrt{ax+b})'}={\frac{a}{2\sqrt{ax+b}}}. For example (4x−3)′=424x−3=24x−3\displaystyle {(\sqrt{4x-3})'}={\frac{4}{2\sqrt{4x-3}}}={\frac{2}{\sqrt{4x-3}}}.
  • (x2+16)′=2x2x2+16=xx2+16\displaystyle {(\sqrt{x^2+16})'}={\frac{2x}{2\sqrt{x^2+16}}}={\frac{x}{\sqrt{x^2+16}}}.
The tangent to the graph of a root function

The tangent is found as for a polynomial: a point and a slope. The example below finds the tangent to the graph of f(x)=x\displaystyle {f(x)}={\sqrt{x}} at the point where x=4\displaystyle {x}={4}:

  • f(4)=4=2\displaystyle {f(4)}={\sqrt{4}}={2}: the point of contact (4,2)\displaystyle (4,2).
  • f′(4)=124=14\displaystyle {f'(4)}={\frac{1}{2\sqrt{4}}}={\frac{1}{4}}: the slope of the tangent.
  • y−2=14(x−4)\displaystyle {y-2}={\frac{1}{4}(x-4)}, that is y=14x+1\displaystyle {y}={\frac{1}{4}x+1}.
f(x)=x\displaystyle f(x)=\sqrt{x}
y=14x+1\displaystyle y=\frac{1}{4}x+1
A=(4,2)\displaystyle A=(4,2)
Exercise 1

f(x)=x\displaystyle {f(x)}={\sqrt{x}}.
The average rate of change of f\displaystyle f from x=9\displaystyle {x}={9} to x=9+h\displaystyle {x}={9+h} is 9+h−3h\displaystyle \frac{\sqrt{9+h}-3}{h}.
