Shifts, stretches and reflections

Shifts, stretches and reflections

A shift

You met the shifts of the parabola in grade 9. They work on the graph of any function:

y=f(x)+k\displaystyle y=f(x)+k
y=f(x−p)\displaystyle y=f(x-p)
  • y=f(x)+k\displaystyle {y}={f(x)+k}: every point goes up k\displaystyle k units (k<0\displaystyle k<0 – down).
  • y=f(x−p)\displaystyle {y}={f(x-p)}: every point moves p\displaystyle p units right (p<0\displaystyle p<0 – left). The value f\displaystyle f took at x\displaystyle x, the new function takes at x+p\displaystyle x+p.

On the board below, f(x)=x2\displaystyle {f(x)}={x^2} and g(x)=(x−2)2+1\displaystyle {g(x)}={(x-2)^2+1}: the vertex (0,0)\displaystyle (0,0) moves 2 right and 1 up, to (2,1)\displaystyle (2,1).

f(x)=x2\displaystyle f(x)=x^{2}
g(x)=(x−2)2+1\displaystyle g(x)=(x-2)^{2}+1
V=(2,1)\displaystyle V=(2,1)
A vertical stretch
y=a⋅f(x)\displaystyle y=a\cdot f(x)

In y=a⋅f(x)\displaystyle {y}={a\cdot f(x)} every value of y\displaystyle y is multiplied by a\displaystyle a, and x\displaystyle x does not change:

  • a>1\displaystyle a>1: the graph is stretched away from the x\displaystyle x-axis (2x2\displaystyle 2x^2 is narrower than x2\displaystyle x^2). 0<a<1\displaystyle 0<a<1: the graph is squeezed towards the axis.
  • The zeros stay where they are: a⋅0=0\displaystyle {a\cdot0}={0}.
  • An extremum point stays at the same x\displaystyle x, and its y\displaystyle y-coordinate is multiplied by a\displaystyle a.
A horizontal squeeze
y=f(ax)\displaystyle y=f(ax)

In y=f(ax)\displaystyle {y}={f(ax)} (a>0\displaystyle a>0) the new function takes at x\displaystyle x the value f\displaystyle f takes at ax\displaystyle ax. So every point (x,y)\displaystyle (x,y) of f\displaystyle f moves to (xa,y)\displaystyle \left(\frac{x}{a},y\right):

  • a>1\displaystyle a>1: the graph is squeezed towards the y\displaystyle y-axis. 0<a<1\displaystyle 0<a<1: it is stretched away from it.
  • The zeros are divided by a\displaystyle a, and the values of y\displaystyle y do not change.

On the board below, f(x)=x2−4\displaystyle {f(x)}={x^2-4}, whose zeros are ±2\displaystyle \pm2, and f(2x)=(2x)2−4=4x2−4\displaystyle {f(2x)}={(2x)^2-4}={4x^2-4}, whose zeros are ±1\displaystyle \pm1.

f(x)=x2−4\displaystyle f(x)=x^{2}-4
g(x)=4x2−4\displaystyle g(x)=4x^{2}-4
A reflection
y=−f(x)\displaystyle y=-f(x)
y=f(−x)\displaystyle y=f(-x)
  • y=−f(x)\displaystyle {y}={-f(x)}: a reflection in the x\displaystyle x-axis. Every point (x,y)\displaystyle (x,y) moves to (x,−y)\displaystyle (x,-y); a maximum becomes a minimum.
  • y=f(−x)\displaystyle {y}={f(-x)}: a reflection in the y\displaystyle y-axis. Every point (x,y)\displaystyle (x,y) moves to (−x,y)\displaystyle (-x,y).
  • An even function does not change when reflected in the y\displaystyle y-axis: f(−x)=f(x)\displaystyle {f(-x)}={f(x)}.
What happens to a point

The table below shows where a point (x,y)\displaystyle (x,y) of the graph of f\displaystyle f moves to:

The functionThe point moves to
f(x)+k\displaystyle f(x)+k(x,y+k)\displaystyle (x,y+k)
f(x−p)\displaystyle f(x-p)(x+p,y)\displaystyle (x+p,y)
a⋅f(x)\displaystyle a\cdot f(x)(x,ay)\displaystyle (x,ay)
f(ax)\displaystyle f(ax)(xa,y)\displaystyle \left(\frac{x}{a},y\right)
−f(x)\displaystyle -f(x)(x,−y)\displaystyle (x,-y)
f(−x)\displaystyle f(-x)(−x,y)\displaystyle (-x,y)

The zeros and the extremum points move this way too. Shifting and changing the shape do not change the number of extremum points.

The family a(x−p)n+k\displaystyle a(x-p)^n+k

Every graph of the form y=a(x−p)n+k\displaystyle {y}={a(x-p)^n+k} is built from the graph of y=xn\displaystyle {y}={x^n}: a stretch by a\displaystyle a (and a reflection when a<0\displaystyle a<0), a shift of p\displaystyle p to the right and k\displaystyle k up. The point (0,0)\displaystyle (0,0) of xn\displaystyle x^n moves to (p,k)\displaystyle (p,k).

The example below builds y=−2(x−1)3+4\displaystyle {y}={-2(x-1)^3+4} from y=x3\displaystyle {y}={x^3} (dashed on the board):

  • a=−2\displaystyle {a}={-2}: a stretch by 2 and a reflection in the x\displaystyle x-axis. x3\displaystyle x^3 rises everywhere, so −2x3\displaystyle -2x^3 falls everywhere.
  • p=1\displaystyle {p}={1}, k=4\displaystyle {k}={4}: the point (0,0)\displaystyle (0,0) moves to (1,4)\displaystyle (1,4).
y=x3\displaystyle y=x^{3}
y=−2(x−1)3+4\displaystyle y=-2(x-1)^{3}+4
C=(1,4)\displaystyle C=(1,4)
