Investigating functions with square roots

Investigating functions with square roots

The steps with a root

A function with a root is investigated by the same steps as a rational function, with three things to watch:

  • the domain comes first, and every table of signs starts and ends at its ends;
  • an end of the domain is an extremum point – an extremum at the end – by what the function does beside it;
  • the asymptotes may differ at ∞\displaystyle \infty and at −∞\displaystyle -\infty, by x2=∣x∣\displaystyle {\sqrt{x^2}}={|x|}.
Example: x4−x2\displaystyle x\sqrt{4-x^2}

The example below investigates f(x)=x4−x2\displaystyle {f(x)}={x\sqrt{4-x^2}} in full.

  • The domain: 4−x2≥0\displaystyle 4-x^2\geq0, that is −2≤x≤2\displaystyle -2\leq x\leq2.
  • f(−x)=−x4−x2=−f(x)\displaystyle {f(-x)}={-x\sqrt{4-x^2}}={-f(x)}: the function is odd.
  • The zeros: x=0\displaystyle {x}={0} and x=±2\displaystyle {x}={\pm2}.
  • f′(x)=4−2x24−x2\displaystyle {f'(x)}={\frac{4-2x^2}{\sqrt{4-x^2}}} (lesson 14): 0 at x=±2\displaystyle {x}={\pm\sqrt{2}}.
x\displaystyle x−2\displaystyle -2−2<x<−2\displaystyle -2<x<-\sqrt{2}−2\displaystyle -\sqrt{2}−2<x<2\displaystyle -\sqrt{2}<x<\sqrt{2}2\displaystyle \sqrt{2}2<x<2\displaystyle \sqrt{2}<x<22\displaystyle 2

The second derivative, by the quotient rule on f′\displaystyle f':

f′′(x)=x(2x2−12)(4−x2)4−x2f''(x)=\frac{x(2x^2-12)}{(4-x^2)\sqrt{4-x^2}}
  • In the domain 2x2−12<0\displaystyle 2x^2-12<0 and the denominator is positive, so f′′\displaystyle f'' has the sign of −x\displaystyle -x.
  • f\displaystyle f is concave up where −2<x<0\displaystyle -2<x<0 and concave down where 0<x<2\displaystyle 0<x<2: (0,0)\displaystyle (0,0) is an inflection point.
  • f′(0)=2\displaystyle {f'(0)}={2}: the tangent at the inflection point is slanted, not level.
f(x)=x4−x2\displaystyle f(x)=x\sqrt{4-x^{2}}
A=(1.414,2)\displaystyle A=(1.414,2)
B=(−1.414,−2)\displaystyle B=(-1.414,-2)
(0,0)\displaystyle (0,0)
  • (2,2)\displaystyle (\sqrt{2},2) – a maximum point, (−2,−2)\displaystyle (-\sqrt{2},-2) – a minimum point.
  • (−2,0)\displaystyle (-2,0) – a maximum at the end, (2,0)\displaystyle (2,0) – a minimum at the end.
Example: xx2+1\displaystyle \frac{x}{\sqrt{x^2+1}}

The example below investigates f(x)=xx2+1\displaystyle {f(x)}={\frac{x}{\sqrt{x^2+1}}}, whose asymptotes y=1\displaystyle {y}={1} and y=−1\displaystyle {y}={-1} you found in lesson 13.

  • The domain: every x\displaystyle x; the function is odd.
  • f′(x)=x2+1−x⋅xx2+1x2+1=1(x2+1)x2+1>0\displaystyle {f'(x)}={\frac{\sqrt{x^2+1}-x\cdot\frac{x}{\sqrt{x^2+1}}}{x^2+1}}={\frac{1}{(x^2+1)\sqrt{x^2+1}}>0}: f\displaystyle f rises throughout, and has no extremum points.
  • f′′(x)=−3x(x2+1)2x2+1\displaystyle {f''(x)}={\frac{-3x}{(x^2+1)^2\sqrt{x^2+1}}}: positive where x<0\displaystyle x<0, negative where x>0\displaystyle x>0.
  • (0,0)\displaystyle (0,0) is an inflection point: the graph rises steepest there, with the slope f′(0)=1\displaystyle {f'(0)}={1}.
f(x)=xx2+1\displaystyle f(x)=\frac{x}{\sqrt{x^{2}+1}}
y=1\displaystyle y=1
y=−1\displaystyle y=-1
(0,0)\displaystyle (0,0)
