Recap: the calculus of grade 10

The rules of differentiation

In grade 10 you learnt that the derivative f′(x)\displaystyle f'(x) is the rate of change of f\displaystyle f at a point – the slope of the tangent to the graph. These are the rules you learnt for working it out:

(xn)′\displaystyle (x^n)' =\displaystyle = nxn−1\displaystyle nx^{n-1}
[f(x)⋅g(x)]′\displaystyle [f(x)\cdot g(x)]' =\displaystyle = f′(x)⋅g(x)+f(x)⋅g′(x)\displaystyle f'(x)\cdot g(x)+f(x)\cdot g'(x)
[f(x)g(x)]′\displaystyle \left[\frac{f(x)}{g(x)}\right]' =\displaystyle = f′(x)⋅g(x)−f(x)⋅g′(x)[g(x)]2\displaystyle \frac{f'(x)\cdot g(x)-f(x)\cdot g'(x)}{[g(x)]^2}
[f(u(x))]′\displaystyle [f(u(x))]' =\displaystyle = f′(u)⋅u′(x)\displaystyle f'(u)\cdot u'(x)
(x)′\displaystyle (\sqrt{x})' =\displaystyle = 12x\displaystyle \frac{1}{2\sqrt{x}}

And the tangent line to the graph at a point (x1,y1)\displaystyle (x_1,y_1) on it:

y−y1\displaystyle y-y_1 =\displaystyle = f′(x1)(x−x1)\displaystyle f'(x_1)(x-x_1)
The steps of an investigation

Investigating a function, as you learnt in grade 10, goes through these steps:

  • The domain: a denominator is not 0, an expression under a root is not negative.
  • The points on the axes: f(x)=0\displaystyle {f(x)}={0}, and f(0)\displaystyle f(0) if 0 is in the domain.
  • Asymptotes – vertical and horizontal.
  • The derivative: solve f′(x)=0\displaystyle {f'(x)}={0}, and build a table of signs of f′\displaystyle f'.
  • Rising, falling and extremum points: f′>0\displaystyle f'>0 – rising, f′<0\displaystyle f'<0 – falling; the sign changes from + to − – a maximum, from − to + – a minimum.
  • A sketch of the graph.
Example: x3−3x2\displaystyle x^3-3x^2

The example below investigates f(x)=x3−3x2\displaystyle {f(x)}={x^3-3x^2}:

  • f′(x)=3x2−6x=3x(x−2)\displaystyle {f'(x)}={3x^2-6x}={3x(x-2)}, so f′(x)=0\displaystyle {f'(x)}={0} where x=0\displaystyle {x}={0} or x=2\displaystyle {x}={2}.
x\displaystyle xx<0\displaystyle x<00\displaystyle 00<x<2\displaystyle 0<x<22\displaystyle 2x>2\displaystyle x>2
f′(x)\displaystyle f'(x)+0−0+
f(x)\displaystyle f(x)risesmaximumfallsminimumrises
f(x)=x3−3x2\displaystyle f(x)=x^{3}-3x^{2}
M=(0,0)\displaystyle M=(0,0)
N=(2,−4)\displaystyle N=(2,-4)
  • A maximum point: (0,0)\displaystyle (0,0); a minimum point: (2,−4)\displaystyle (2,-4).
  • The function rises where x<0\displaystyle x<0 and where x>2\displaystyle x>2, and falls where 0<x<2\displaystyle 0<x<2.
Square root and rational functions

At the end of grade 10 you met two families of functions, which you investigate in depth in this course:

  • A square root function, such as f(x)\displaystyle \sqrt{f(x)}: defined where f(x)≥0\displaystyle f(x)\geq0; an extremum point may be at an end of the domain.
  • A rational function, a quotient of polynomials: defined where the denominator is not 0.
  • A zero of the denominator that is not a zero of the numerator – a vertical asymptote; a zero of both – usually a removable discontinuity, a hole in the graph.
  • A horizontal asymptote – the value the function approaches as x\displaystyle x grows or falls without end.
