The second derivative and concavity

The second derivative and concavity

The second derivative

The second derivative of f\displaystyle f is the derivative of its derivative – the rate of change of the slope:

f′′(x)\displaystyle f''(x) =\displaystyle = (f′(x))′\displaystyle \left(f'(x)\right)'

For example, for f(x)=x3−5x\displaystyle {f(x)}={x^3-5x}:

  • f′(x)=3x2−5\displaystyle {f'(x)}={3x^2-5};
  • f′′(x)=6x\displaystyle {f''(x)}={6x}.
The sign of f′′\displaystyle f'' and concavity

f′′\displaystyle f'' is the derivative of f′\displaystyle f', so its sign says whether f′\displaystyle f' rises or falls – and that is exactly the concavity of f\displaystyle f:

f′′(x)>0\displaystyle f''(x)>0

– f′\displaystyle f' rises, and f\displaystyle f is concave up (∪\displaystyle \cup).

f′′(x)<0\displaystyle f''(x)<0

– f′\displaystyle f' falls, and f\displaystyle f is concave down (∩\displaystyle \cap).

To find the intervals of concavity, solve the inequalities f′′(x)>0\displaystyle f''(x)>0 and f′′(x)<0\displaystyle f''(x)<0, just as you find where a function rises and falls from f′\displaystyle f'.

Example: x3−4x2−3x+7\displaystyle x^3-4x^2-3x+7

The example below finds the intervals of concavity of f(x)=x3−4x2−3x+7\displaystyle {f(x)}={x^3-4x^2-3x+7}:

  • f′(x)=3x2−8x−3\displaystyle {f'(x)}={3x^2-8x-3}.
  • f′′(x)=6x−8\displaystyle {f''(x)}={6x-8}.
  • f′′(x)>0\displaystyle f''(x)>0 where x>43\displaystyle x>\frac{4}{3}, and f′′(x)<0\displaystyle f''(x)<0 where x<43\displaystyle x<\frac{4}{3}.
f(x)=x3−4x2−3x+7\displaystyle f(x)=x^{3}-4x^{2}-3x+7
  • f\displaystyle f is concave down where x<43\displaystyle x<\frac{4}{3}, and concave up where x>43\displaystyle x>\frac{4}{3}.
  • The maximum point, x=−13\displaystyle {x}={-\frac{1}{3}}, lies where the function is concave down, and the minimum point, x=3\displaystyle {x}={3}, where it is concave up.
Example: x4−6x2\displaystyle x^4-6x^2

The example below finds the intervals of concavity of f(x)=x4−6x2\displaystyle {f(x)}={x^4-6x^2}:

  • f′(x)=4x3−12x\displaystyle {f'(x)}={4x^3-12x}.
  • f′′(x)=12x2−12=12(x−1)(x+1)\displaystyle {f''(x)}={12x^2-12}={12(x-1)(x+1)}.
x\displaystyle xx<−1\displaystyle x<-1−1<x<1\displaystyle -1<x<1x>1\displaystyle x>1
f′′(x)\displaystyle f''(x)+−+
f(x)\displaystyle f(x)∪\displaystyle \cup∩\displaystyle \cap∪\displaystyle \cup
f(x)=x4−6x2\displaystyle f(x)=x^{4}-6x^{2}
  • f\displaystyle f is concave up where x<−1\displaystyle x<-1 and where x>1\displaystyle x>1, and concave down where −1<x<1\displaystyle -1<x<1.
  • The graph changes the way it bends twice: at x=−1\displaystyle {x}={-1} and at x=1\displaystyle {x}={1}.
