Roots of order n

Roots of order n

The solutions of zn=w\displaystyle {z^n}={w}

As with the roots of unity, substitute z=rcis⁡θ\displaystyle {z}={r\operatorname{cis}\theta} in the equation zn=Rcis⁡φ\displaystyle {z^n}={R\operatorname{cis}\varphi}:

  • rncis⁡nθ=Rcis⁡φ\displaystyle {r^n\operatorname{cis}n\theta}={R\operatorname{cis}\varphi}, so rn=R\displaystyle {r^n}={R} and nθ=φ+2kπ\displaystyle {n\theta}={\varphi+2k\pi}.
  • r=Rn\displaystyle {r}={\sqrt[n]{R}} and θ=φn+2kπn\displaystyle {\theta}={\frac{\varphi}{n}+\frac{2k\pi}{n}}.
zk=Rn[cos⁡(φn+2kπn)+isin⁡(φn+2kπn)]\displaystyle z_{k}=\sqrt[n]{R}\left[\cos\left(\frac{\varphi}{n}+\frac{2k\pi}{n}\right)+i\sin\left(\frac{\varphi}{n}+\frac{2k\pi}{n}\right)\right]k=0,1,…,n−1\displaystyle k=0,1,\ldots,n-1
  • The equation has n\displaystyle n different solutions, all on a circle centred at the origin with radius Rn\displaystyle \sqrt[n]{R}.
  • The angle between two neighbouring solutions is 2πn\displaystyle \frac{2\pi}{n}: they are the vertices of a regular polygon, turned by the angle φn\displaystyle \frac{\varphi}{n}.
Worked example: z3=8i\displaystyle {z^3}={8i}

The example below solves z3=8i\displaystyle {z^3}={8i}:

  • 8i=8cis⁡π2\displaystyle {8i}={8\operatorname{cis}\frac{\pi}{2}}: R=8\displaystyle {R}={8}, φ=π2\displaystyle {\varphi}={\frac{\pi}{2}}, n=3\displaystyle {n}={3}.
  • 83=2\displaystyle {\sqrt[3]{8}}={2}, and θ=π6+2kπ3\displaystyle {\theta}={\frac{\pi}{6}+\frac{2k\pi}{3}}.
  • k=0\displaystyle {k}={0}: 2cis⁡π6=3+i\displaystyle {2\operatorname{cis}\frac{\pi}{6}}={\sqrt{3}+i}.
  • k=1\displaystyle {k}={1}: 2cis⁡5π6=−3+i\displaystyle {2\operatorname{cis}\frac{5\pi}{6}}={-\sqrt{3}+i}.
  • k=2\displaystyle {k}={2}: 2cis⁡3π2=−2i\displaystyle {2\operatorname{cis}\frac{3\pi}{2}}={-2i}.

The three solutions are the vertices of an equilateral triangle in the circle of radius 2, as in the coordinate system below.

x2+y2=4\displaystyle x^{2}+y^{2}=4
z0=(1.732,1)\displaystyle z_0=(1.732,1)
z1=(−1.732,1)\displaystyle z_1=(-1.732,1)
z2=(0,−2)\displaystyle z_2=(0,-2)
From one root to all the roots

If z0\displaystyle z_0 is a solution of zn=w\displaystyle {z^n}={w}, all the solutions are z0\displaystyle z_0 times the roots of unity of order n\displaystyle n: (z0ωk)n=z0n⋅(ωn)k=w\displaystyle {(z_0\omega^k)^n}={z_0^n\cdot(\omega^n)^k}={w}. In the Gauss plane – z0\displaystyle z_0 turned again and again by the angle 2πn\displaystyle \frac{2\pi}{n}.

  • 1+i\displaystyle 1+i is a solution of z4=w\displaystyle {z^4}={w}, so w=(1+i)4=−4\displaystyle {w}={(1+i)^4}={-4}.
  • The roots of unity of order 4 are 1\displaystyle 1, i\displaystyle i, −1\displaystyle -1, −i\displaystyle -i, so the solutions are 1+i\displaystyle 1+i, −1+i\displaystyle -1+i, −1−i\displaystyle -1-i, 1−i\displaystyle 1-i.
