Exponential and logarithmic functions, grade 12 (5 units)

Two new families of functions: the exponential functions and the logarithmic functions, each the inverse of the other.Subjects

They describe many processes in nature and in the economy – interest in a bank, bacteria multiplying, a medicine breaking down in the blood, a radioactive substance. The course builds on what you learnt in grade 11 (5 units): the derivative of a rational function and of a root function, the second derivative, concavity and inflection points, investigating a function, extremum problems, the integral, the area and the accumulation function. The topics, in order:

  • powers and logarithms: the laws of powers, a rational exponent, the logarithm and its laws, the change of base, exponential and logarithmic equations and inequalities;
  • the functions: y=ax\displaystyle {y}={a^x} and its properties, its link to a geometric sequence, growth and decay and the half-life, the logarithmic function as the inverse function, the number e\displaystyle e and the natural logarithm;
  • differential calculus: the derivatives of ex\displaystyle e^x, ax\displaystyle a^x, ln⁡x\displaystyle \ln x and log⁡ax\displaystyle \log_a x, investigating with the second derivative, the graphs of ef(x)\displaystyle e^{f(x)} and of ln⁡f(x)\displaystyle \ln f(x), investigations that combine all the functions you know, and extremum problems;
  • integral calculus: integrals that lead to ex\displaystyle e^x, to ax\displaystyle a^x and to ln⁡x\displaystyle \ln x, finding a function from its derivative, areas and accumulation.

There are two kinds of lessons:

  • learning lessons – an explanation, worked examples and a few exercises to try;
  • practice lessons – questions only.
