The exponential function

The exponential function

The exponential function

In an exponential function the variable is in the exponent, and the base is a constant number:

f(x)=ax\displaystyle f(x)=a^{x}a>0, a≠1\displaystyle a>0,\ a\neq1
  • A negative base has no value for some x\displaystyle x: (−9)12=−9\displaystyle {(-9)^{\frac{1}{2}}}={\sqrt{-9}} is not a number.
  • The base 1 gives 1x=1\displaystyle {1^x}={1} for every x\displaystyle x – a horizontal line.

On the axes: 3x\displaystyle 3^x and (13)x\displaystyle \left(\frac{1}{3}\right)^x.

f(x)=3x\displaystyle f(x)=3^{x}
g(x)=(13)x\displaystyle g(x)=\left(\frac{1}{3}\right)^{x}
y=0\displaystyle y=0
The properties of ax\displaystyle a^x

Every exponential function y=ax\displaystyle {y}={a^x} has the same properties:

  • The domain: every x\displaystyle x.
  • ax>0\displaystyle a^x>0 for every x\displaystyle x: the graph does not meet the x-axis.
  • It meets the y-axis at (0,1)\displaystyle (0,1), because a0=1\displaystyle {a^0}={1}.
  • The horizontal asymptote y=0\displaystyle {y}={0}: for a>1\displaystyle a>1 the graph approaches it on the left, for 0<a<1\displaystyle 0<a<1 on the right.
  • For a>1\displaystyle a>1 the function increases; for 0<a<1\displaystyle 0<a<1 it decreases.
(1a)x\displaystyle \left(\frac{1}{a}\right)^x, the mirror image of ax\displaystyle a^x

(13)x=3−x\displaystyle {\left(\frac{1}{3}\right)^x}={3^{-x}}: at x\displaystyle x it has the value 3x\displaystyle 3^x takes at −x\displaystyle -x.

  • So the graph of (13)x\displaystyle \left(\frac{1}{3}\right)^x is the mirror image of the graph of 3x\displaystyle 3^x in the y-axis.
  • The same holds for every base: (1a)x=a−x\displaystyle {\left(\frac{1}{a}\right)^x}={a^{-x}}.
Equal steps in x\displaystyle x and a geometric sequence

In an exponential function, each step of 1 in x\displaystyle x multiplies y\displaystyle y by the same number. In a linear function each such step adds the same number to y\displaystyle y:

x\displaystyle x0\displaystyle 01\displaystyle 12\displaystyle 23\displaystyle 3
f(x)=3⋅2x\displaystyle {f(x)}={3\cdot2^{x}}3\displaystyle 36\displaystyle 612\displaystyle 1224\displaystyle 24
g(x)=2x+3\displaystyle {g(x)}={2x+3}3\displaystyle 35\displaystyle 57\displaystyle 79\displaystyle 9
  • The values of f\displaystyle f are a geometric sequence with the ratio 2, the base.
  • The values of g\displaystyle g are an arithmetic sequence with the difference 2, the slope.
  • So a constant ratio of consecutive values, at equal steps of x\displaystyle x, shows that the function is exponential.
Shifts and stretches

In the function y=k⋅ax−p+q\displaystyle {y}={k\cdot a^{x-p}+q}, the graph of ax\displaystyle a^x moves p\displaystyle p to the right and q\displaystyle q up, and is stretched by a factor of k\displaystyle k. The asymptote moves with the graph, to y=q\displaystyle {y}={q}.
The example below finds the properties of f(x)=2x−1−4\displaystyle {f(x)}={2^{x-1}-4}:

  • 2x\displaystyle 2^x shifted 1 to the right and 4 down; the asymptote is y=−4\displaystyle {y}={-4}.
  • The x-axis: 2x−1=4=22\displaystyle {2^{x-1}}={4}={2^{2}}, so x−1=2\displaystyle {x-1}={2} and x=3\displaystyle {x}={3}.
  • The y-axis: f(0)=2−1−4=−3.5\displaystyle {f(0)}={2^{-1}-4}={-3.5}.
  • The base 2 is greater than 1, so the function increases.
f(x)=2x−1−4\displaystyle f(x)=2^{x-1}-4
y=−4\displaystyle y=-4
A=(3,0)\displaystyle A=(3,0)
B=(0,−3.5)\displaystyle B=(0,-3.5)
