Investigating exponential functions

The steps of an investigation

A function with ex\displaystyle e^x is investigated in the same steps as a rational function or a root function in grade 11:

  • the domain;
  • the points where the graph meets the axes;
  • asymptotes – vertical ones, and horizontal ones where x\displaystyle x is far from 0;
  • f′(x)\displaystyle f'(x): the extremum points and the intervals of increase and decrease;
  • f′′(x)\displaystyle f''(x): the intervals of concavity and the inflection points;
  • a sketch of the graph.

ef(x)>0\displaystyle e^{f(x)}>0 for every x\displaystyle x, so the sign of ef(x)⋅g(x)\displaystyle e^{f(x)}\cdot g(x) is the sign of g(x)\displaystyle g(x), and it is 0 only where g(x)=0\displaystyle {g(x)}={0}. It pays to take ef(x)\displaystyle e^{f(x)} out as a common factor in f′\displaystyle f' and in f′′\displaystyle f''.

ex\displaystyle e^x grows faster than any power

As x\displaystyle x grows, ex\displaystyle e^x overtakes every power of x\displaystyle x, even when the power is larger at first:

  • x=5\displaystyle {x}={5}: x3=125\displaystyle {x^3}={125}, ex≈148\displaystyle e^x\approx148.
  • x=10\displaystyle {x}={10}: x3=1000\displaystyle {x^3}={1000}, ex≈22,026\displaystyle e^x\approx22{,}026.
  • x=20\displaystyle {x}={20}: x3=8000\displaystyle {x^3}={8000}, ex≈485,165,195\displaystyle e^x\approx485{,}165{,}195.

Two facts follow, which we use for asymptotes:

  • As x\displaystyle x grows without limit, xne−x=xnex\displaystyle {x^ne^{-x}}={\frac{x^n}{e^x}} comes close to 0.
  • Where x\displaystyle x is negative and far from 0, xnex\displaystyle x^ne^x comes close to 0.
Investigating x2e−x\displaystyle x^2e^{-x}

The example below investigates the function f(x)=x2e−x\displaystyle {f(x)}={x^2e^{-x}}:

  • The domain: every x\displaystyle x.
  • The axes: x2e−x=0\displaystyle {x^2e^{-x}}={0} only where x=0\displaystyle {x}={0}, and f(x)≥0\displaystyle f(x)\geq0 for every x\displaystyle x.
  • Asymptote: as x\displaystyle x grows, x2ex\displaystyle \frac{x^2}{e^x} comes close to 0 – the asymptote y=0\displaystyle {y}={0} on the right. Where x\displaystyle x is negative and far from 0, f(x)\displaystyle f(x) grows without limit.
  • f′(x)=2xe−x−x2e−x=e−x(2x−x2)\displaystyle {f'(x)}={2xe^{-x}-x^2e^{-x}}={e^{-x}(2x-x^2)}, and f′(x)=0\displaystyle {f'(x)}={0} where x=0\displaystyle {x}={0} or x=2\displaystyle {x}={2}.
  • A minimum (0,0)\displaystyle (0,0), a maximum (2,4e2)≈(2,0.541)\displaystyle \left(2,\frac{4}{e^2}\right)\approx(2,0.541).
  • f′′(x)=e−x(2−2x)−e−x(2x−x2)=e−x(x2−4x+2)\displaystyle {f''(x)}={e^{-x}(2-2x)-e^{-x}(2x-x^2)}={e^{-x}(x^2-4x+2)}, and f′′(x)=0\displaystyle {f''(x)}={0} where x=2±2\displaystyle {x}={2\pm\sqrt{2}}.
f(x)=x2e−x\displaystyle f(x)=x^{2}e^{-x}
M=(2,0.541)\displaystyle M=(2,0.541)
P=(0.586,0.191)\displaystyle P=(0.586,0.191)
Q=(3.414,0.384)\displaystyle Q=(3.414,0.384)
  • The graph is concave up where x<2−2\displaystyle x<2-\sqrt{2} or x>2+2\displaystyle x>2+\sqrt{2}, and concave down where 2−2<x<2+2\displaystyle 2-\sqrt{2}<x<2+\sqrt{2}.
  • Two inflection points: (0.586,0.191)\displaystyle (0.586,0.191) and (3.414,0.384)\displaystyle (3.414,0.384), roughly.
  • The right-hand inflection point is where the graph stops bending down and begins to come close to the asymptote.
Concavity on the two sides of an asymptote

The example below investigates f(x)=exx\displaystyle {f(x)}={\frac{e^x}{x}}:

  • The domain: x≠0\displaystyle x\neq0. The vertical asymptote: x=0\displaystyle {x}={0}.
  • Where x\displaystyle x is negative and far from 0, ex\displaystyle e^x comes close to 0, and so does exx\displaystyle \frac{e^x}{x}: the asymptote y=0\displaystyle {y}={0} on the left.
  • f′(x)=ex⋅x−exx2=ex(x−1)x2\displaystyle {f'(x)}={\frac{e^x\cdot x-e^x}{x^2}}={\frac{e^x(x-1)}{x^2}}: a minimum (1,e)\displaystyle (1,e).
  • f′′(x)=ex(x2−2x+2)x3\displaystyle {f''(x)}={\frac{e^x(x^2-2x+2)}{x^3}}. x2−2x+2>0\displaystyle x^2-2x+2>0 for every x\displaystyle x (its discriminant is negative), so the sign of f′′\displaystyle f'' is the sign of x3\displaystyle x^3.
f(x)=exx\displaystyle f(x)=\frac{e^{x}}{x}
x=0\displaystyle x=0
M=(1,2.718)\displaystyle M=(1,2.718)
  • Concave down where x<0\displaystyle x<0, and concave up where x>0\displaystyle x>0.
  • The concavity changes at x=0\displaystyle {x}={0}, but there is no inflection point there: x=0\displaystyle {x}={0} is not in the domain.
