The laws of logarithms and the change of base

The laws of logarithms and the change of base

The logarithm of a product

A logarithm is an exponent, so the laws of powers give laws of logarithms. When powers are multiplied their exponents are added – so the logarithms are added:

log⁡ax+log⁡ay\displaystyle \log_{a}x+\log_{a}y =\displaystyle = log⁡a(x⋅y)\displaystyle \log_{a}(x\cdot y)x>0, y>0\displaystyle x>0,\ y>0
  • Let m=log⁡ax\displaystyle {m}={\log_a x} and n=log⁡ay\displaystyle {n}={\log_a y}, that is x=am\displaystyle {x}={a^m} and y=an\displaystyle {y}={a^n}.
  • x⋅y=am⋅an=am+n\displaystyle {x\cdot y}={a^m\cdot a^n}={a^{m+n}}, so log⁡a(x⋅y)=m+n\displaystyle {\log_a(x\cdot y)}={m+n}.
A quotient, a power and a root

In the same way, the quotient law and the law of a power of a power give:

log⁡ax−log⁡ay\displaystyle \log_{a}x-\log_{a}y =\displaystyle = log⁡a(xy)\displaystyle \log_{a}\left(\frac{x}{y}\right)x>0, y>0\displaystyle x>0,\ y>0
log⁡a(xb)\displaystyle \log_{a}(x^{b}) =\displaystyle = b⋅log⁡ax\displaystyle b\cdot\log_{a}xx>0\displaystyle x>0
  • A root is a power, so log⁡axn=1nlog⁡ax\displaystyle {\log_a\sqrt[n]{x}}={\frac{1}{n}\log_a x}.
  • log⁡a1x=−log⁡ax\displaystyle {\log_a\frac{1}{x}}={-\log_a x}.
  • There is no law for the logarithm of a sum: log⁡a(x+y)\displaystyle \log_a(x+y) is not log⁡ax+log⁡ay\displaystyle \log_a x+\log_a y.
Worked example: a calculation

The example below calculates log⁡240−2log⁡25\displaystyle \log_{2}40-2\log_{2}\sqrt{5} by joining the logarithms into one:

  • 2log⁡25=log⁡2(5)2=log⁡25\displaystyle {2\log_{2}\sqrt{5}}={\log_{2}(\sqrt{5})^{2}}={\log_{2}5}.
  • log⁡240−log⁡25=log⁡2405=log⁡28=3\displaystyle {\log_{2}40-\log_{2}5}={\log_{2}\frac{40}{5}}={\log_{2}8}={3}.
The change of base

A logarithm to one base is a quotient of two logarithms to any other base c\displaystyle c:

log⁡ax\displaystyle \log_{a}x =\displaystyle = log⁡cxlog⁡ca\displaystyle \frac{\log_{c}x}{\log_{c}a}c>0, c≠1\displaystyle c>0,\ c\neq1
  • Let y=log⁡ax\displaystyle {y}={\log_a x}, that is ay=x\displaystyle {a^y}={x}.
  • Take the logarithm to the base c\displaystyle c of both sides: y⋅log⁡ca=log⁡cx\displaystyle {y\cdot\log_c a}={\log_c x}, so y=log⁡cxlog⁡ca\displaystyle {y}={\frac{\log_c x}{\log_c a}}.
  • log⁡832=log⁡232log⁡28=53\displaystyle {\log_{8}32}={\frac{\log_{2}32}{\log_{2}8}}={\frac{5}{3}}.
  • With c=b\displaystyle {c}={b} you get log⁡ab=1log⁡ba\displaystyle {\log_a b}={\frac{1}{\log_b a}}: for example log⁡93=12\displaystyle {\log_{9}3}={\frac{1}{2}} and log⁡39=2\displaystyle {\log_{3}9}={2}.
A logarithm to any base on a calculator

Changing to base 10 calculates any logarithm with the log⁡\displaystyle \log key:

log⁡320=log⁡20log⁡3≈2.727\log_{3}20=\frac{\log20}{\log3}\approx2.727
  • Round only at the end, after dividing.
  • A check: 32.727\displaystyle 3^{2.727} is close to 20.
Expressing with a parameter

It is given that log⁡25=a\displaystyle {\log_{2}5}={a}.
The example below expresses other logarithms with a\displaystyle a, through the numbers 2 and 5 in them:

  • log⁡240=log⁡2(8⋅5)=log⁡28+log⁡25=3+a\displaystyle {\log_{2}40}={\log_{2}(8\cdot5)}={\log_{2}8+\log_{2}5}={3+a}.
  • log⁡20.2=log⁡215=−a\displaystyle {\log_{2}0.2}={\log_{2}\frac{1}{5}}={-a}.
  • log⁡52=1log⁡25=1a\displaystyle {\log_{5}2}={\frac{1}{\log_{2}5}}={\frac{1}{a}}.
