The logarithm

The logarithm

An exponent that is no whole number

The equation 2x=8\displaystyle {2^x}={8} has the solution x=3\displaystyle {x}={3}, because 23=8\displaystyle {2^3}={8}. The equation 2x=7\displaystyle {2^x}={7} has one solution too, because 2x\displaystyle 2^x increases and takes every positive value:

  • 22=4\displaystyle {2^2}={4} and 23=8\displaystyle {2^3}={8}, so the solution is between 2 and 3.
  • It cannot be written as a fraction or a root, so it is given a name: log⁡27\displaystyle \log_2 7 – the logarithm of 7 to the base 2.
The definition of the logarithm

The logarithm of b\displaystyle b to the base a\displaystyle a is the exponent to which a\displaystyle a is raised to give b\displaystyle b:

log⁡ab=x  ⟺  ax=b\displaystyle \log_{a}b=x\iff a^{x}=ba>0, a≠1, b>0\displaystyle a>0,\ a\neq1,\ b>0
  • The base is positive and not 1, as in the exponential function.
  • b\displaystyle b is positive: ax\displaystyle a^x is positive for every x\displaystyle x, so log⁡20\displaystyle \log_2 0 and log⁡2(−4)\displaystyle \log_2(-4) have no value.
Calculating a logarithm

To calculate a logarithm, write the number as a power of the base:

  • log⁡232=5\displaystyle {\log_{2}32}={5}, because 25=32\displaystyle {2^{5}}={32}.
  • log⁡139=−2\displaystyle {\log_{\frac{1}{3}}9}={-2}, because (13)−2=9\displaystyle {\left(\frac{1}{3}\right)^{-2}}={9}.
  • log⁡55=12\displaystyle {\log_{5}\sqrt{5}}={\frac{1}{2}}, because 512=5\displaystyle {5^{\frac{1}{2}}}={\sqrt{5}}.
  • log⁡48=32\displaystyle {\log_{4}8}={\frac{3}{2}}, because 432=(4)3=8\displaystyle {4^{\frac{3}{2}}}={\left(\sqrt{4}\right)^{3}}={8}.
Properties that follow from the definition

The logarithm and the power to the same base undo each other:

log⁡a(ab)\displaystyle \log_{a}(a^{b}) =\displaystyle = b\displaystyle b
alog⁡ax\displaystyle a^{\log_{a}x} =\displaystyle = x\displaystyle xx>0\displaystyle x>0
  • log⁡a1=0\displaystyle {\log_a 1}={0}, because a0=1\displaystyle {a^0}={1}.
  • log⁡aa=1\displaystyle {\log_a a}={1}, because a1=a\displaystyle {a^1}={a}.
The logarithm to base 10

The logarithm to base 10 is written without the base: log⁡x=log⁡10x\displaystyle {\log x}={\log_{10}x}. A calculator has a log⁡\displaystyle \log key for it.

  • log⁡1000=3\displaystyle {\log1000}={3} and log⁡0.01=−2\displaystyle {\log0.01}={-2}.
  • log⁡50≈1.699\displaystyle \log50\approx1.699: 101.699\displaystyle 10^{1.699} is close to 50.
Solving ax=b\displaystyle {a^x}={b}

By the definition, the solution of ax=b\displaystyle {a^x}={b} is x=log⁡ab\displaystyle {x}={\log_a b}. The example below solves 4⋅3x=20\displaystyle {4\cdot3^{x}}={20}:

  • Isolate the power: 3x=5\displaystyle {3^{x}}={5}.
  • By the definition: x=log⁡35\displaystyle {x}={\log_{3}5}.
  • On a calculator with a log⁡□\displaystyle \log_{\square} key: x≈1.465\displaystyle x\approx1.465. How to calculate it with the log⁡\displaystyle \log key alone – in the next lesson.
