The number e and the natural logarithm

The number e and the natural logarithm

Interest worked out more often

Three banks offer to hold 1,000 ₪ for one year:

  • Plenty Bank: interest of 100% a year. At the end of the year – 1000⋅2=2000\displaystyle {1000\cdot2}={2000} ₪.
  • Growth Bank: interest of 50% for half a year, twice. At the end of the year – 1000⋅1.52=2250\displaystyle {1000\cdot1.5^2}={2250} ₪.
  • Success Bank: interest of 25% for three months, four times. At the end of the year – 1000⋅1.254≈2441.41\displaystyle 1000\cdot1.25^4\approx2441.41 ₪.

The more periods the year is split into, the larger the sum – but not without limit. Split into n\displaystyle n periods, the sum is 1000⋅(1+1n)n\displaystyle 1000\cdot\left(1+\frac{1}{n}\right)^n:

  • n=12\displaystyle {n}={12} (every month): ≈2613.04\displaystyle \approx2613.04 ₪.
  • n=365\displaystyle {n}={365} (every day): ≈2714.57\displaystyle \approx2714.57 ₪.
  • n\displaystyle n very large: the sum comes close to 2718.28\displaystyle 2718.28 ₪.

The number that (1+1n)n\displaystyle \left(1+\frac{1}{n}\right)^n comes close to is called e\displaystyle e: e≈2.71828\displaystyle e\approx2.71828. It is a constant, like π\displaystyle \pi, and not a fraction.

ex\displaystyle e^x and the natural logarithm ln⁡x\displaystyle \ln x

ex\displaystyle e^x is the exponential function whose base is e\displaystyle e. The logarithm to the base e\displaystyle e is called the natural logarithm, written ln⁡\displaystyle \ln:

ln⁡x=log⁡ex\displaystyle \ln x=\log_{e}x

ex\displaystyle e^x and ln⁡x\displaystyle \ln x are inverses of each other, so their graphs are symmetric about the line y=x\displaystyle {y}={x}:

f(x)=ex\displaystyle f(x)=e^{x}
g(x)=ln⁡x\displaystyle g(x)=\ln x
y=x\displaystyle y=x
  • eln⁡x=x\displaystyle {e^{\ln x}}={x} for every x>0\displaystyle x>0, and ln⁡ex=x\displaystyle {\ln e^x}={x} for every x\displaystyle x.
  • ln⁡1=0\displaystyle {\ln1}={0} and ln⁡e=1\displaystyle {\ln e}={1}.
  • The laws of logarithms hold for ln⁡\displaystyle \ln too: ln⁡(xy)=ln⁡x+ln⁡y\displaystyle {\ln(xy)}={\ln x+\ln y}, ln⁡xy=ln⁡x−ln⁡y\displaystyle {\ln\frac{x}{y}}={\ln x-\ln y}, ln⁡xb=bln⁡x\displaystyle {\ln x^b}={b\ln x}.
  • A calculator has an ln⁡\displaystyle \ln key: ln⁡2≈0.693\displaystyle \ln2\approx0.693.
Every exponential function to the base e\displaystyle e

Every positive number a\displaystyle a equals eln⁡a\displaystyle e^{\ln a}, so:

ax\displaystyle a^{x} =\displaystyle = exln⁡a\displaystyle e^{x\ln a}
  • 2x=exln⁡2≈e0.693x\displaystyle {2^x}={e^{x\ln2}\approx e^{0.693x}}.
  • A process of growth and decay f(t)=f(0)⋅qt\displaystyle {f(t)}={f(0)\cdot q^t} can be written f(t)=f(0)⋅ect\displaystyle {f(t)}={f(0)\cdot e^{ct}}, where c=ln⁡q\displaystyle {c}={\ln q}.
  • c>0\displaystyle c>0 (that is q>1\displaystyle q>1) – growth; c<0\displaystyle c<0 (that is 0<q<1\displaystyle 0<q<1) – decay. Interest of 5% a year: c=ln⁡1.05≈0.0488\displaystyle {c}={\ln1.05\approx0.0488}.
Equations with e\displaystyle e and ln⁡\displaystyle \ln

The examples below solve equations by the definition of ln⁡\displaystyle \ln and by substitution:

  • 3ex=12\displaystyle {3e^x}={12}: ex=4\displaystyle {e^x}={4}, so x=ln⁡4\displaystyle {x}={\ln4}.
  • ln⁡(x+1)=2\displaystyle {\ln(x+1)}={2}: x+1=e2\displaystyle {x+1}={e^2}, so x=e2−1\displaystyle {x}={e^2-1}. It is in the domain, because x+1=e2>0\displaystyle {x+1}={e^2>0}.
  • e2x−5ex+6=0\displaystyle {e^{2x}-5e^x+6}={0}: we substitute t=ex\displaystyle {t}={e^x} and get t2−5t+6=0\displaystyle {t^2-5t+6}={0}, that is t=2\displaystyle {t}={2} or t=3\displaystyle {t}={3}.
  • ex=2\displaystyle {e^x}={2} or ex=3\displaystyle {e^x}={3}, so x=ln⁡2\displaystyle {x}={\ln2} or x=ln⁡3\displaystyle {x}={\ln3}.
The logarithmic scale

In growth y=A⋅ect\displaystyle {y}={A\cdot e^{ct}} the values of A\displaystyle A and c\displaystyle c are hard to read off the graph. Drawing ln⁡y\displaystyle \ln y instead of y\displaystyle y gives a straight line:

ln⁡y=ln⁡A+ct\displaystyle \ln y=\ln A+ct
  • The slope of the line is c\displaystyle c.
  • The line meets the vertical axis at ln⁡A\displaystyle \ln A.
y=0.5x+3\displaystyle y=0.5x+3
(0,3)\displaystyle (0,3)
(4,5)\displaystyle (4,5)

In a culture of bacteria the number of bacteria y\displaystyle y was measured, and ln⁡y\displaystyle \ln y was drawn as a function of the time t\displaystyle t in hours. The result was a line through (0,3)\displaystyle (0,3) and (4,5)\displaystyle (4,5). The example below finds A\displaystyle A and c\displaystyle c.

  • The slope: c=5−34=0.5\displaystyle {c}={\frac{5-3}{4}}={0.5}.
  • ln⁡A=3\displaystyle {\ln A}={3}, so A=e3≈20.09\displaystyle {A}={e^3\approx20.09}.
  • y=e3⋅e0.5t\displaystyle {y}={e^3\cdot e^{0.5t}}: at the start there were about 20 bacteria.
